Difference between contact and friends?

In my privacy settings I can choose who can see different parts of my profile. So my question is, what is the difference between contacts and friends. Are my friens considered contacts too?

I think friends are contacts, but contacts do not have to be friends, and it has to do with your privacy settings. There are some places you can allow "only friends" or you can allow "friends and contacts" or you can allow "members" or you can allow "everyone"...

From what I've gathered (could be wrong), contacts are people who have sent you a friend request which you have not approved (not sure it counts if you rejected it), and vice versa.
