I've recently started singing karaoke (which takes some doing since I'm shy! But I managed to do it!), and found out about something called "Suicide Karaoke" - in which other people in the group you're with pick the songs you're going to do, and you get to pick THEIR songs!

Which got me thinking: If I really wanted to torture somebody, I'd make them sing THESE songs! (* I like all of these songs, don't get me wrong - I just think they're very difficult to sing!)

Barenaked Ladies - "One Week"

REM - "It's the End of the World As We Know It"

Billy Joel - "We Didn't Start the Fire"

Snow - "Informer"

And for the country fans...
Hank Snow - "I've Been Everywhere"

hahahaha ALL of those songs pose a definite lyrical challenge I agree but the REM is really not so bad cause it's a steady tempo and more of a quick andante .
The ones I find more of a challenge are the uber-rangey ones, key changes dont bother me but jumping from one octave to another is tricky in a club LOL

Adore by Prince is difficult to sing but I don't think there's a karaoke version. Here's a live version, not karaoke but gives you an idea:

Also Slow Love by Prince, which there is a karaoke version of.

Thieves In The Temple is another one.

Sorry they're all Prince

For a non-Prince song, probably Blue Moon (by The Marcels)

I'm not even sure Snow gets the words right to Informer every time.

I've done Reba McIntyre's "Fancy" before which I found a bit challenging as parts of it are like rap with a twang.

Those are hard for me too. If someone wanted to torture ME, they'd make me sing THIS song!

Minnie Riperton - "Loving You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE0pwJ5PMDg

Now if they really DID do that to me I'd probably literally never be able to sing karaoke again - those high notes HURT me to sing! That's why I only do songs by alto singers! (or maybe some by male singers as well).

I'd also have a problem with a lot of Mariah Carey's songs. She's actually considered an alto but she has a crazy range from alto to "whistle range" (even above most sopranos, into Minnie Riperton territory!) The ones where Mariah Carey stays within the alto range are fine for me to sing though.

The worst song I ever sang was a duet with a pal. It was Fairytale of New York by Kirsty McColl and the Pogues. What made things worse was the fact that it's a Christmas song and we sang it in July.

Some idiot even put it on Youtube

The US National Anthem is notoriously difficult to sing due to the melody.

Are you talking melody or words or does it matter? There are a couple VERY quick tempo songs I can think of where you have to have great enunciation while going rapidly through the lyrics.

Rap with a twang I could do - but that particular song tweaks me the wrong way, so I won't do that one. My natural voice is suited for country music, which is ironic since it's not one of my favorite genres (although I like a little of it - I'm planning to do some Faith Hill songs later on...).

LOL! I'm not sure how difficult that would be to sing, but hey, I need to pick a Christmas song to do next time I do karaoke! :biggrin1: Faith Hill has one, if it's in the book. I don't know it though...

I was thinking rapid lyrics, but there are also songs that are difficult because of the range. I'm an alto with rather limited range so I have to be careful what I sing!

What are the very quick tempo songs you were thinking of? I mentioned the quick tempo ones that I know of off the top of my head. (I've probably heard yours too, just didn't think of them...)

And yes, I have thought maybe we should've picked a national anthem that's easier to sing!

For me, the karaoke challenges are those with very high or low notes. I have limited vocal range.

I have limited range too but I have more trouble with high notes than low notes.

If they have this on the list it's a bitch to sing!

I'd forgotten that one!!! Yes, definitely a "lyrics go by really fast!" song!

Here's another one...and the nerd in me loves this song too! :biggrin1:
