with earthquakes there are certain measures that can be take for building to withstand tremors...
But you don't have to create areas with no buildings, to protect other areas with buildings.
It simply was a bad example.

And as an argument AGAINST investments is it simply useless. It proves that investments are usefull.

No, that's not my intent. Houston is prone to flooding, as are New Orleans and other cities. And there is certainly at least the option to address that risk. My point was that no reasonable preparation, planning or regulation would have prevented this flooding.
What if it would have limited the destruction?
What if, with a few improvements some houses would have been safed and one life less would have been lost?

Isn't it reasonable to think about solutions that prevent as much as possible, if "total protection" isn't possible?

This is a popular belief here. The floolding is the result of poor city building construction. Too many concrete prevents the water to return the earth below surface. This is the same physics when you fill up a swimming pool in your backyard. Houston is built like a giant swimming pool in which water levels rise rapidly.

For Billions of years the humans were nomads and never endangered their existence. having comfort comes with the
sacrifice of composing with a nature that will always remain stronger than us because we are only a small grain of sand in the immensity of the world.

Well that's an offensive load of crap.

The anti-transgender stuff is an especially nice touch considering that the Texas house of representatives refused to pass the governor's discriminatory bathroom bill (again).

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...band-together-help-harveys-victims/618262001/

"Houston has experienced a cultural boom in recent decades and was labeled the most racially and ethnically diverse large metropolitan area in the United States by researchers with the Kinder Institute for Urban Research and the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas."

Seriously, why the fuck is it all the liberals that are the hateful fucks in here lately?

I only had 1 person PM me just to doublecheck if I was okay because of the flooding and that person is solidly conservative (I'm fine, DFW is high and dry, but all these cheap shots against people in a natural disaster are super-distasteful).

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...cane-harvey-floods-huppke-20170828-story.html

The Washington Post's website featured a video of a man named Howard Harris in Cypress, Texas. He has an aluminum boat and has been cruising the neighborhood picking people up and taking them to higher ground.

We don't know much of anything about Harris, other than that he owns a boat and has a heart. He could be a staunch conservative or a wacky liberal, in favor of a border wall or against one.

Who knows? And when record-setting rains are falling and people's lives are at risk, who cares?

He is a human being with a boat. And in that moment, in that situation, the many issues dividing this country reveal themselves for what they are: divisive only up until we need someone, or someone needs us.

I didn't propose clearing all development, as you well know there are preventative measures than can be put in place, there are measures to help.c

Everywhere around the world places of population are built in natures way. If nature wishes to clear a path through a human made city or zone, she will. If an asteroid dropped out of space and took out half the planet, who would we blame?

The best we can do is learn. Does not matter what we do, nature will eventually win. Why? Because we live on a planet which is unpredictable, it will continue to throw things against us which we have learned to survive, and then some.

The most important thing we can do is to help those who are caught in her wake. Cause at anytime, it can be any one of us who are looking for assistance.

We live maybe 80 years if we are lucky, if the lesson is not learned to extend a hand to your neighbour when they need it. Then nature, the planet, life and the Universe as a whole has taught you nothing of surviving in it..

Donald Trumps of the world are specs on the landscape. His vision is his name on towers, planes and anything material. Him becoming President has initiated his downfall, he just does not know it yet.

With other words: better do nothing, it could be too less.

We are not a small grain of sand. We have the ability through generations as a species to outlive mountains which become grains of sand, molten rock, and desert.

We just need leaders who look beyond their lifetime for our existence to continue, not their short term outlook of financial gain.

When disaster strikes you find out who your friends are.
Across the political spectrum both side and all colours and creeds are coming together to help in Texas,.
so with perfect timing from POTUS he announced getting tenders for the Great Wall of Mexico.
No thought, no ideas and no common sense and no idea about what is going on on the ground in Texas and surrounding states.
because

who offered any help they could for rescue and clearing up in Texas, their neighbour?
Why MEXICO.

Wow, that fucking Trump sure knows how to say thank you!

World in no rush to offer Trump help post-Harvey
After Katrina, countries around the globe offered to help the U.S. After Harvey, only a few — Mexico and troubled Venezuela among them — have volunteered aid.

....
But compared with past crises, the list of foreign governments lining up to help the United States this time is relatively short for now. And the few countries that have raised their hand may get more out of it — politically, at least — than the U.S.

The relative dearth of global goodwill, some analysts say, may stem from anger at Trump over his “America First” approach to the world, which has irked even staunch U.S. allies.
"Foreign governments are holding back, and that hasn’t been the case historically,” said Markos Kounalakis, a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. “They appear to be much more cautious, whether it’s for domestic political reasons or displeasure with President Trump. Do they want to be seen as helping Trump?”

It's worse than that.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4836516/U-S-not-sure-accept-Mexico-s-hurricane-aid.html

When Katrina hit, Mexico offered aid as well, which president Bush gracefully accepted.

"In 2005, Mexico sent 200 troops and 45 military vehicles to Texas to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Their efforts resulted in the distribution of more than 184,000 tons of supplies, as well as hundreds of medical consultations and a reported 170,000 prepared meals. Mexico also sent aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and regularly sends a crew of bomberos — considered among the best in the world — to provide aid fighting major wildfires and to help with environmental concerns."

Mexico's offered aid again, for Harvey, which our governor has welcomed, but Trump has to fucking think about it. I hope voters come 2020 reflect on the fact that their elected president is willing to play political games with their safety and wellbeing in an emergency.

I apologize for my government not chipping in. We support you and always have 100% in your efforts around the world.

I have just left a message on the PM's page about our governments navel gazing on home issues and minority agenda. Hopefully a response will be forthcoming :)

It pisses me off that minority issues overrule majority issues once again.

President Trump's son Eric Trump tweeted on Thursday that CNN wouldn't report on his father's pledge to donate $1 million to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
