We have separate locker/restrooms because people (mostly men) are pervs.

No woman wants to be stared at while she's undressed. It would make them feel uncomfortable. When people feel uncomfortable in a setting, they usually don't return.

It's pretty simple.

Yes, not all men are pervs, yes not all women mind being stared at, but some do, so that's an issue. You have to think about it from a business point of view. You want people to feel comfortable, they will keep coming back.

What about gay men and lesbians? That's why we have individual showers as opposed to just one large shower. Straight men don't like being stared at by other men. I'm sure women feel the same way about lesbians.

It's all about privacy and consent. There's more good people in the world than bad, but those bad people still exists.

Better question would be, why do you want to have a co-sex locker room with no shower dividers, so you can stare and ogle? I'm not saying you do, but it is what it is. If you truly don't care, then you don't.

just gotta say it's kind of interesting to see some sexually repressive / conservative comments on a message board called "large penis support group", lol.

Consent.

If I post pictures of my dick here because I want y'all to look at it. I may or may not want you to look at it in a locker room.

Think of it like this. A women in her bikini wants you to see her body. A woman in her bra and panties do not.

... liking to look at nude men or women doesn't necessarily make you... a bad person, does it?...
thanks xmarksbreakdownx...

If you don't have their consent, then yes. Yes it does.

I want separation. If my gym didn't offer it I would go elsewhere. I feel uncomfortable enough going into the weights section on my own with the 'bros' all sitting around in a gang on the benches staring.

Bloody hell... empathy is apparently a rare quality around these parts, sexual repression has got fuck all to do with it.

See? This is EXACTLY what I was talking about. She wants to feel comfortable at her gym.

I really like looking at nude people. I am excellent at life drawing. There isn't anything sexual about it though, I'm just reducing that person to lines, shapes, and proportions when I'm drawing. I can appreciate the beauty of the human form without there being anything sexual about it.

I'm unhappy that nudity has become more synonymous with sex and porn than it used to be even. Nudity has nothing to do with sex, in the same way that a short skirt does not provoke rape. Why are people becoming more frightened of nudity?

I feel the same way; unfortunately, the "westernization" that Japan and some other countries complain about has oversexualized the body and the interaction between men and women. Hence while I might be comfortable with cross sex nudity in Sweden or Finland, I most definitely am not comfortable with it in North America.

There are many men, young and old, who feel that way also. They deal with it by changing /showering at home rather than at the gym.

Some people will always have reasons for not wanting to change in the presence of others and there are ways to deal with that, but that is not justification for general, across-the-board, separation of the sees.

In your opinion.

I don't think more people FEAR nudity, they are merely modest. Why is that something we have to stamp out and mock?

I can draw either. It really doesn't matter to me whether they are male or female. I just like people who are good at staying still, there is more skill involved with that than most people realize.

Truth.

When women feel comfortable sharing change rooms with men, let's talk. Until then, it's up to the rest of us to listen to women about why they don't feel comfortable sharing space with us, and to do something about it.

There are 2 active threads on this site I can think of right now about creeps in the gym. Personally I don't care, I'm able to ignore them but a lot of people are intimidated by these actions not to mention pedophiles lurking in locker rooms .

To the extent that those things are true, the correct response is to do something about them, not use them as an excuse to avoid the natural evolution away from religion - imposed, forced modesty.

If you encounter a creep at the gym - whether on the main floor, in the locker room, shower, sauna, wherever - just man up and report him to management. These people can survive in the mainstream world only if they are not taken down by the good people who surround them.

You mean like the stuff that happened in Cologne? I think you might have made yourself very unpopular for saying that, so brace yourself for the backlash. .

There have been few to no reports of sexual assaults happening in mixed saunas in Germany and the rest of Northern Europe. However, there was some talk of Turkish and other Muslim men going to them to gawk, having never even seen naked women in their own repressed cultures. This may lead to changes now with the influx of asylum seekers in those countries.

The press and other observers have remarked that there is definitely a problem that the majority of the first wave of refugees from Syria and Northern Africa was young and male. Of course it is logical that young men would brave the stresses of the journey in the greatest numbers. However, this kind of imbalance can lead to the mess that happened on the party-night at New Years in Cologne and other places. It is not racist to understand that the sexual repression, rigid segregation of the sexes, and sexual ignorance of young men in Muslim states creates violence against women. They don't have to be refugees. Just look at everyday on the streets of Cairo.

OK. so in a public place, like a store or a gym, a group of men see a woman in the toilets and assault her. or vice versa, since we all know it happens. what then? how would OP limit or stop this?

Do you know what? Please do not respond to a thread unless you are willing to read the entire thing.

Nowhere have I encouraged a "co-sex locker room with no shower dividers" - in fact, I don't even like all-male open showers and would probably not use a gym which had them or, at the least, not shower there. Also, as I have pointed out already, I find the amount of actual nudity even in my current all-male locker room to be so minimal that one would have to make a huge effort to catch even a glimpse of a penis more than once every few weeks.

And, no, in my experience most men are not pervs. The vast majority of us are normal, decent, folks just going about our business. If you are finding yourself surrounded by pervs, maybe it's time you look inward and try to figure out why that might be the case.

I was showering at the gym this morning when my thoughts drifted about the configuration of the men's shower area and I wondered if the women's was exactly the same or just similar.

And then this thought: why, exactly, do we insist on separating men and women in this way? We are all adults, we all know what the other sex's body parts look like (or will eventually find out anyway), we all have essentially the same bodily functions.

Now, you might say that we need to separate the sexes to keep, for example, the men from hitting on the women. But, if that is the case, how do we deal with gay men sharing lockers and showers with straight men? What about lesbian or bi women sharing with other women who may not be so inclined?

Seriously - in the year 2016, isn't it time to put aside puritanical and biblical teachings and just put men, women, bi, straight, homosexual, all in the same space?

It would be a huge step towards normalizing nudity and I wish we would in a way. Starship Troopers style.
