Protocols be damned! This is a major non-issue. However, I did admire the temerity of the Ford Administration when Queen Liz and her consort Prince Phil came over for a visit in the 1970's. When then Pres. Ford took Liz's hand for the opening dance at the formal ball held in her honor, the military band played "That's Why the Lady is a Tramp."

My, how the UK Press got their collective panties in a big twist.

All you liberal ass bitches need to shut the fuck up and show some respect! STYLYUNG may have gotten the number of Americans killed by Japan in WWII wrong but the premise of his statement still holds quite a bit of validity. The man IS a WWII vet himself and fought against the evils that sadly we're seeing our country succumb to from an enemy within. Imperialism is on the horizon as soon as Obama declares himself supreme leader. The fascism is already here and history is repeating itself by those who fail to remember the history of the last century.

Obama's gaffe was apparently some ill-advised attempt at cultural sensitivity and respect that many scholars on Japanese culture are already pointing out how overboard and unnecessary it was. Rather than showing respect with a slight nod of the head, LIKE EVERY OTHER WOLRD LEADER DID AND DOES, your messianic president bowed at an almost 90 degree angle, which was seen by the rest of the world as weak and submissive. His foreign policy is disastrous as it is and now he goes out and commits this gaffe.

You assholes don't have to agree with STYLYUNG, and God knows your pathological ideological bent completely prevents you from it; but the man is an American hero who has lived through things that would mentally paralyze all you candy asses. He happens to be a dear friend of mine. You tell him to grow up but he's wiser than you lot could ever hope to be. Your behavior here in this thread is proof of the lack of civil discourse in this country. Nothing will ever be better with your horrible attitudes.

Exactly! It all depends how far back you want to take these things, I guess Obama should never shake hands with Italian or Swedish leaders, due to the fact the a few thousand years ago Americans (who in the majority are English settlers) were invaded and killed by the Romans and the Vikings while still living in England....
By the logic of the OP, Indigenous Americans should really just have the right to whip the ass of any Euro descended Americans on sight. Unfortunately, I would have to kick my own ass - only part of it, but still. :biggrin1:

Oh, gee... look who's back after an extensive session of preverbal, hyper-conservative freebasing?

All you liberal ass bitches need to shut the fuck up and show some respect!

To whom, people like you or the OP? On what grounds? That he's adamantly displayed his own paranoidal insecurities of masculinity by overreacting to a simple gesture of respect made by the President?

STYLYUNG may have gotten the number of Americans killed by Japan in WWII wrong

He got more than that wrong, but go on...

but the premise of his statement still holds quite a bit of validity.

... with a bunch of immature, image-obsessed, chest beating crybabies who would instantly assume that a bow to a foreign leader indicates a symbol of inferiority.

The man IS a WWII vet himself

That doesn't make his comments anymore valid than the next guy.
He gets respect for fighting in the war. But that's not an excuse to say something ridiculous.

and fought against the evils that sadly we're seeing our country succumb to from an enemy within.

Right now, the "enemy within" is stupidity and ignorance. Which side are you on?

Imperialism is on the horizon as soon as Obama declares himself supreme leader. The fascism is already here and history is repeating itself by those who fail to remember the history of the last century.

And that, my friends, is the sound of a rabid conservative snorting up his nose a bump of crystal meth, wrapped with the most ridiculous talking points ever conceived.

Obama's gaffe was apparently some ill-advised attempt at cultural sensitivity and respect that many scholars on Japanese culture are already pointing out how overboard and unnecessary it was.

Bullshit. It's VERY customary in Japanese culture to bow to someone as an act of kindness. Even if some people find the gesture to be a little overboard, the fact that one steps above and beyond to be courteous would not be frowned upon by any rational thinking person. But I guess, when the closest thing you've been to anything Japanese is a Pokemon doll and a Combo Plate #4 with Chicken Fingers, I can understand how you'd easily disconnect with another culture's perspective of reality.

Rather than showing respect with a slight nod of the head, LIKE EVERY OTHER WOLRD LEADER DID AND DOES

Which is still a bow... somehow, you've forgotten this as well.

your messianic president bowed at an almost 90 degree angle, which was seen by the rest of the world as weak and submissive.

Bullshit again. There are different degrees to the art of bowing in Japanese culture. It is understood that the steeper the angle, the more respect the person is bestowing upon the recipient.

The many degrees of bowing… Ways to Say Hello

His foreign policy is disastrous as it is and now he goes out and commits this gaffe.

Idiots like you tried to say that the first time he "bowed" to a foreign leader and it didn't work then either. Nice try.

You assholes don't have to agree with STYLYUNG, and God knows your pathological ideological bent completely prevents you from it;

So sayeth the paranoid who thinks our President is essentially "assed out" by bowing, in what he thinks was close to 90 degrees. Perhaps you associate that gesture to something else altogether? Something that you're probably all too familiar with intellectually?

but the man is an American hero who has lived through things that would mentally paralyze all you candy asses.

Good for you... wanna cookie?

He happens to be a dear friend of mine.

How nice. You have ONE.

You tell him to grow up but he's wiser than you lot could ever hope to be.

Well, if we went by his OP then he has far more to prove... "war hero" or not.

Your behavior here in this thread is proof of the lack of civil discourse in this country.

And this is coming from the person who started his post: All you liberal ass bitches need to shut the fuck up and show some respect! Lack of civil discourse he says... ROTLMMFAO!!!

Learn something quickly here... in order to get respect, you must first GIVE IT. To simply demand it because of your past actions doesn't cut it. That only displays an unhealthy level of bitterness fueled by your own beliefs that everyone in this country owes you something... and nobody here owes you or your friend JACK SHIT. He will always have a certain level of respect for being a veteran. But that doesn't give he or you the privilege to talk down to other adults who choose not to go into the Military. And by all means, if you feel obligated to do so because of your First Amendment Rights, then we can always use ours to return the favor, and I'm sure you won't like the response.

LoL. Is this satire? I especially like the thing about lack of civil discourse at the end... and the big flowing American flag. I think somebody wants to be Colbert.

I don't think he's engaging in satire, judging from his post history, but if he is, he nothing short of dedicated to his shtick.

bla bla bla and to think only 7 more years of wingnut whining.
Who says it will be 7 years, he may not make a second term, or congress may get real stupid a try to remove his term limits.

As usual people are speaking wothout listening. Look up the incident, at least one Japanese paper won't print the pic, due to the fact that as Jay said a deep bow shows contrition and self-contempt. This has lead the Japanese media to pull the pic, because in the Japanese culture the gesture paints Obama as weak, and they don't want weak allies. It should have been a slight head nod, specifically less than 15deg. So lets clean the sand from our collective pussy, and move on. As a former vet myself, it does bug me that I could find this in less than a minute on the internet, and the foriegn greetings czar couldn't get the pres a lil' bit better prepared.

VinylBoy: ur link is for the business world, which is very different. Try Wikipedia there's was a lil different. Ultimately I can't give you my source, only because she is a Japanese immigrant and my boss. No way would i tell her about this site. Would be so offensive to her that I might lose my job. She was definitely surprised by the depth of the bow. According to her,Yukiko, this again shows weakness and submission. The only thing worse would have been if he got down on his knees. This is ONLY used to apologize and show fault.

Jay: good defending a vet, we understand sacrifice for country in a way civ's never can.

Like Government, in some ways, is not a form of business.

Whether or not Obama's gestures appear to be a sign of respect or weakness is subject to the person making the judgement call. I saw nothing wrong with it. This, just like many other rhetorical arguments conjured up by dissenters has no definitive answer. There's really no reason for anyone to be debating this topic. Those who don't like him will always look at Obama's actions as wrong. This is yet another example of people completely overreacting. God forbid if Obama gave the man a running chest bump and a fist pound.

I'm not surprised to see Obama break protocol that the POTUS does not bow, curtsey, or pay any sort of physical deference to any political leader.

Thanks for making up POTUS protocol out of thin air. You shouldn't be surprised because Obama is not the first president to bow to another head of state.

I'll bet you're not.

It's called common courtesy in accordance with local custom.

But, I imagine you'd rather he just swaggered on in, like any Texas cowboy would have done.

One president lies about WMDs, which kills 4,500 American soldiers, the other bends over for a second. Hang 'em both, I say.

This is too easy, Skippy.

Here's a clip of President Nixon and Chairman Mao in 1972. Nixon not only shakes the hand and smiles at one of the most ruthless and murderous dictators in history, but bows at him as well.

Once again, massive forum fail Skippy: massive.

Well, if Nixon sets the standard for Obama, I guess things are falling into place...

Inane, Ericsson. Nixon, Eisenhower, and Reagan are among those who bowed down to other heads of state. The point is that it is no big deal.

Another point is that for all Nixon's failings, he was a genius at foreign policy.

Americans Overwhelmingly Say Obama Bowing To Japanese Emperor Was Appropriate -- Even In A Fox Poll

Eric Kleefeld | November 19, 2009, 3:09PM

Despite a lot of complaining by conservatives, the American people don't actually have any problem with President Obama bowing to the Emperor of Japan -- and that's according to the new Fox News poll.

The numbers: Appropriate 67%, Never appropriate 26%. Even a majority of Republican respondents were okay with the bow, by a 53%-40% margin. Democrats weigh in at 84%-9%, and independents 62%-30%.
