In opposition to the philosophers, people are not rational animals. Emotions run high when people feel they've been wronged, and people turn on each other in a flash, particularly when the person that logically should be the one lashed out at it absent.

I don't believe Danny/DMW should be invited back, the key word being invited. I'm sure he's a fine man, and I enjoyed his posts. He may, if he chooses, register under another name and contribute.

Same for me. Thanks to those who clarified. Someone made some comment in chat, a week or so about DMW, and I asked who it was, and got told not to ask, and to not stir up all "the hurt". Being relatively new here, I had no idea what that meant, and what I'd just done. So, my "another question" is, and again, like CUBE, I'm not pushing either, but I'm curious why someone's false life would tear up the membership? What I mean is, if the guy lied to the whole board, why aren't all of the mixed feelings of anger, betrayal, sympathy, or understanding focused on HIM, and not on each other?

I get the sense that this was something major here, so thanks again for those that cleared up the mystery for the rest of us.
Yes, it was major. Some knew the truth before others. And DMW's intellect and wit is unmatched. You that didn't know him, don't realize that he became for us like a family member. All this brought about pain for everyone. It always does. The details may change but the drama of such stays pretty much the same. We are still humans here on the internet.

Again, you can search the past pages of the threads. ETC I think is where most of them are. Most have DMW somewhere in the title. I could spend the time finding it for you. But if you really want to know the story as it unfolded, you go back and read the old threads. Then you will understand the drama here much better than any second hand story that we who lived through it might tell.

Hmm, I'm gonna take "Ignorance is Bliss, for $1,000" please. I already have enough reading to do with following the trail of "Veiled Racism" and it's offshoots, while trying to figure out which days Webster is in or out of favor. I barely have time for flesh-piles anymore, and I've only been here about a month, or so, now. Besides, it sounds like a closed chapter, for the most part. However, thanks again, for briefing the uninformed.

I would hope that there would be an opportunity for board discussion, as Freddie seems to have suggested, if Danny ever wishes to return. Several members with whom I have communicated have two major unresolved issues that they and I would like answered by Danny before they (or I) would be comfortable with his return to the boards in any form.

To others:

Danny is indeed a person. He is a friend of mine still despite a rather dismal choice he made on how to exit. I know some people think it's an unforgivable sin, but to me, those do not exist.

The person who wrote the volumes of beautifully crafted posts we all came to know was in fact a flesh and blood person sitting behind a keyboard. I always say when you know WHY a person does what they do, you're in a better position to judge it's nature. He was in a black place and made a horrible decision, that not hard to understand.

Most of us feel we would never do that ourselves, and perhaps we would not. Still, what IS our transgression? We all do things of which we are not proud, and I assure you Danny feels like a tool over all of this. He DID write a letter of explaination, but at the time, it was too soon for people who WERE hurting to deal with it, I don't know about the climate now.

It is my dearest hope that will will not take this opportunity to open old wounds, but rather to begin to heal.

Well, dig it, I liked the guy, and really wished to God it hadn't ended like this with him.
I don't like to remember him how it ended here with him, but rather remember how in spite of it all, how he existed here. The man clearly has a keen intellect, a good nature, and warm personality.

And perhaps his own personal demons had gotten the better of him while on here, & he needed more time resolve them.
I personally do not see the reason to necessitate drudging up old bad & painful memories of his departure, & am confident that this particular thread will help to lay to rest all that needed to be said about all of this. because if we don't, then we will allow this to exacerbate by putting it on the back burner.

The guy was banned.
He's gone.
Kaput.
His departure wasn't voluntary.
He has no say in it.

A permanent ban is permanent. Period.

To paraphrase rawbone8: Why keep flushing this toilet? It isn't going to unflush without getting shit all over the place.

I would love to see him invited back. Under the name "Danny", or under some other name, makes no difference. I joined in 2004. His postings were the most intelligent, articulate and well informed I have read throughout my membership years.

A large part of the reason for the difference in opinion is that people are all different. I think that from the previous posts you will quickly surmise that he was extremely intelligent and well liked. I would imagine that it was not universal, there were probably some critics who never voiced their opinions; but for the most part people liked and respected both him and his opinions. I think that the people who exposed him in the end even appreciated him- until they figured out he was not Jacinto as we knew him. Part of the problem is that near the end there were some who suspected that he was not completely truthful and others who defended him. It became quite bitter with well known and well liked personalities on both sides of the issue and that subject did in itself cause quite a lot of derision among regular posters. I will have to admit that I was on the side that wanted to believe that he was who he claimed and that his accusers had personal vendettas. For that mistaken belief I apologize.

I missed the whole end (my computer was down for a couple months) but I can only imagine that it brought out the worst. Even as things stand some people are willing to forgive what was done while some cannot bring themselves to consider the possibility. For myself I would love to see him back on the board (I was not what you would have consider a close friend- I believe that I only exchanged one PM with him the whole time I was here.) I was, however someone who admired his way with words and humour. I do not think that he would feel very welcome coming back as himself is and admitting it. IMHO he would need to invent a personality/name/location etc… or likely face rejection. Of course that brings us right back to where we started.

The idea of a pole is flawed. I would bet that half of the registered users missed the whole DMW debacle. It would have to be a question for people who were around for the fall out and know who he was. A question for people who could judge him based on his posts and not just the notion of a man who invented a persona. Or I guess we could just wait until there are enough new members here that when the question “who was DMW?” gets asked the whole board gives a collective shrug and says “who?!?”

I'm sorry to stir these fetid waters rigfht now, but when i first started on this site, Jacinto aka DMW was the smartest and wisest responder and elucidator on the site--always trenchant, refreshing, and intellectually stimulaitng. AND he was a moderator.

how bummed to know that some of it was deception. but at least he's not dead!

now where's Surfer?
