Why does it seem that every gay guy I know (foreign and domestic) has been or is planning to go to San Francisco sometime in their life?

Is it THAT special a place for queer guys? I wonder if a lot of these gay tourists coming to find the garden of gay eden leave a bit disappointed after experiencing its gay "culture".

It's not gay "Mecca". Every gay does not have to go.

The first thing I do think of when I hear San Francisco is the word "gay".

If I do a cross country road trip to Cali I do plan on at least visiting there, as well as San Diego and LA again, but I don't have a specific plan to go.

Well, if I did go to San Fran--I would go to visit a friend for a couple of days.
As far as gay culture, I don't know. I doubt that I would go to San Fran for that.

I want to go just to say I did. I've heard that they have great restaurants. And if I'm not mistaken, there are a lot of gay guys there. :)

I've been to SF a few times, and it's a fun place to go. I like the south part of CA better, so to me, San Diego is way more special that San Francisco. It's all a matter of what you like.

I've been a few times as a child and then later in college, but never as an out gay man. I'd like to visit again sometime to experience the whole gay thing there, see some friends, and just experience what it's like. I think I'd have a better appreciation for it. Many people in New York regard San Francisco as America's only other cosmopolitan city. That's saying something.

It does bother me that the whole thing can come crashing down on my head at any moment. I pretend that isn't going to happen when I go there but I still don't like not being near an exit in anyplace prone to earthquakes. It is a pretty city from what I remember though it did seem terribly grimy. I'll be sad to see it go.

I grew up in the Bay Area until the age of 10, then moved to Texas. I had a bunch of t-shirts that said "San Francisco" on them, '49ers gear, etc. I had no idea that many of my new classmates literally believed that every single person in San Francisco was gay. Needless to say I got beat up a lot, but it got better after the 49ers beat the Cowboys on their way to winning the Super Bowl.

We plan to visit SF (and many other places in CA including WeHo, San Diego, and LA).

And, like OC, I think WEHO, Fort Lauderdale and other places are FAR gayer (meaning, they have a greater proportion of gay men and women living therein).

Yup. Did a year in SF after graduating from university in the UK. It was really hard in the beginning, but got better - especially after I found out how easy it was to work on a fake ID. I thought it was going to be gay paradise, but was quite surprised by how miniscule the Castro is. Much more going on in European gay scenes if you ask me.
