I can never imagine myself saying babe or baby, to a women or even to another man, which I didn't think guys did until I found myself on Adam4Adam and some guys would greet me and call me "bb" or the like.

I say "sweetie" and "honey" quite often when referring to women. Not intended to be perverted (obviously), but rather more affectionate and friendly than anything else. "What's wrong, sweetie?" "What can I do for you, honey?" etc etc.

strangers or acquaintances, not lovers.

what about other things...
sexy?
darling?
sweet cheeks?

Babe = doesn't bother me. It's commonly used around here, I use it myself. Being called 'a babe'... meh
Sexy = depends on context, but tbh I'm not fussed on this
Darling = I dislike this as it sounds false and pretentious to me, however I think some Americans can carry it off because I can tell they are using it the same way I would say 'babe' and it sounds natural
Sweet cheeks = you will ick me out and I will find it hard to take you seriously ever again (unless it's said tongue-in-cheek obviously)

Terms of endearment usually don't bother me, but if, for example, a man uses one to try and 'put me in my place' (think David Cameron's comment to Angela Eagle) then expect hostility in return.
What about 'luv'?

I dunno...after seeing Barb Wire...I wouldn't call anyone babe. :)

Don't call me babe! - YouTube

**the opening credits scene is the best..but I could only find it in Hungarian :)...She's undercover as a stripper and a guy calls her babe...she takes off her stilletto and throws it at the guy...impailing it in his head. Then says...Don't call me Babe. Then walks off* LOL :)**

This is it. :) It's rather hot...and funny. BARB WIRE /A bosszú álló angyal/ - YouTube

Hardly.

How about you call me Dragon and leave it at that?

Well... I wasn't going to do the entire Babe quote, was I?

Surprised you didn't take me up on snookums. Snugglebum implies a degree of marshmallowness that would be completely out of kilter with your very shapely bottom.

Dragon is looking promising, or The Dragon when I'm talking about you.

I'll keep working on it... :)

Personally, I don't care. If it's meant in a nice way, it's nice. If not, it's not. A name (unless said in an annoying voice) only bothers me when it has a personal-context and is used publicly. For example, "Hello, man with concealed vagina!" My secret lady-parts are my own business! Another example is if a stranger says, "Nice arse." I won't thank them, but I won't want to punch them either. I ignore it, I suppose.

Pet names definitely imply a familiarity with someone. If you don't have it... don't use them, I say. A fairly good rule of thumb - if you don't know my ACTUAL name, don't substitute it with some generic pet name. There's a relatively good chance that I am *not* your baby, babe, sweetie, sugar, honey, darlin', boo, ma, mami, shawty. Ugh. When I first came to the south, I was horrified by all the men calling me these names. I've gotten used to it from older guys. They genuinely mean it in a sweet way. Younger ones typically piss me off with it. I guess I was just taught that it is disrespectful to behave in an overly familiar way with people you don't know. Also, if you're younger than I am and you call me baby... Grrrrr.
