Not a huge fan of it from strangers, but now that I think about it I don't hear it a lot from loved ones either! My last friend called me 'baby' and I was pretty fine with that, but another guy called me 'babe' and I wasn't so enthralled by that one. Strange. Guess it all depends on who is doing the talking.

It generally bothers me. But not always. I have customers at work that I've spoken with enough for it to be comfortable, and we have that sort of fun semi-flirtatious connection so it works. Outside of that situation, though, if someone says it I'm usually thinking, "Um, I'm not your baby/sweetheart/darling." I never actually say anything, though. It usually isn't worth the time and effort.

Back in 2000, a guy who worked for me for a few months in the military called other women "honey pants." We had formal counseling about his sexual harassment; I actually yelled at him because he didn't see it was wrong. I almost took him to mast for it. It was a shame, because he was a total professional except for this one ugly behavior that he just couldn't grasp was wrong, even with women telling him to his face and me putting a dent in his career.

Black guys can totally pull "baby" off. Lucky bastards. White guys find it much harder.

Thats so weird. I actually think it's true. Somehow black guys can get away that.

lol... "Maybe yer holdin yer mouth wrong" (as my grandfather used to say when I never caught the cards I wanted), or maybe you gotta say it with "SOOOoooooooullll" to pull it off (hey baby, bring your FINE ass on ovah heah!)...

Or maybe we'd just sound like assholes trying to say shit like "snookums" (although I personally like to toss in an occasional "why thanky M'am"... just for effect).

Fact is, sometimes you want to go a bit informal, mean no offense, but don't know what the hell else to use. Even "lady" can offend.

For example, when posting a comment to a picture. What to say???
"Beautiful pictures, m'am." or "DAmn, girl. You SOME fine!"

....or perhaps, "Why, those are some mighty bodacious TA-taaas..... Miss."

I will kindly refrain from the use of pet names until they are used/visited upon myself and of their own accord. To do so as a first "step" or as to become familiar all too soon would likely get your dick tied in a knot for you and a sound kick to the ass.

Now, for the ones that do allow the privilege? Some very sweet, and frankly, tooth putrefying, saccharine things can be said as to tie up your dentists' appointment book for the next millennium.

Not a single term of endearment slips my lips until the honor has been bestowed upon me first. ;>

(So sayeth the fox sometimes known as "pookie" in certain, very close circles :D)

I have used it for both sexes! I was once at a party, my ex (i still called her baby and she called me honey) and my male friend was there, I called out baby 3 times trying to get my exs attention. Finally, he said, "what"? I said, "not you, her!" It was kinda funny and luckily everyone was pretty buzzed and no one thought twice about it!

I do call a lot of my intimate friends baby. Only once was I corrected and told to call them by their first name. He was having a str8 moment! LOL!

some women call me dear, baby, honey and the like. i think guys are least likely to be sexually attacked and refuse, so those little words dont communicate anything worse than affection normally. these little words can creep chicks out - with all the harassment, molestation, rape, assault and etc carried out on women.
