There's such a broad range of levels of devoutness, not to mention theological perspectives. I can't speak for those outside Catholicism, possibly Orthodox Christianity, but when one first get's "born in the spirit" everything changes, sometimes forever, sometimes for a few months or a few years. Addictions disappear overnight, sometimes to return, sometimes not. Tastes in music and entertainment definitely change overnight. Sometimes it lasts, sometimes not. Usually it lessens in intensity over time. Your friend may be in this for "the long haul," or it may scale back quite a bit in time. It is true, that masturbation is considered a misuse of the gift of sexuality in more theologically conservative religions. There are a surprising number who do not masturbate, some in fact who feel no attraction to it whatsoever. I know quite a few of them, and we are in each others' confidence enough that I believe them. I have no ax to grind and no subconscious "need" for everyone to think like me. The fact that they aren't obsessed with masturbation is both believable and encouraging. Alot of it has to do with how much time you have on your hands. If you've delved into doing good works and being very busy, you probably won't have much time for masturbation. If you go home from work or school and do only what is required to "unwind," you'll probably have a pretty hard time not putting your hands down your pants. It's not universal of course, but generally, those who's lives focus on others don't have a lot of time for adolescent pursuits.
