even contract girls/guys are owned by their studios.
performers don't get much money from the DVDS, the performance or sells. most money is generated by merchandise, appearances and personal websites *money from advertising or memberships*
all secondary money is tied to a performers "brand" name recognition and familiarity. piss off the studio, and boom, you are cut off from your ability to earn income. at least in the industry.
the power structure is completely wonky. *kicks porn studios*
I've never met a female porn star, though I've met plenty of male ones who do gay porn. You are right about the lack of money: it's certainly not enough to actually live on, there's a very short shelf-life to performers who overproduce, and there are no residuals, at any rate. The money they earn making an individual "movie" is all they earn, period, even if a scene is subsequently marketed in a compilation or some other repackaging of the initial product (such as the internet).
Porn performers know the rules going in: they're there to be exploited and know it. That's one reason why lifestyle porn people tend to fall under personality types that I seldom find intriguing or compelling in any way. I won't say that they're sociopaths, but I will say that their low self-esteem is mirrored by a complete disregard for the feelings of others, at least in most cases. The guys I've met tend to be pretty damaged human beings.
The big question is whether their damage was a result of working in the industry or whether the industry attracts damaged people. IMO it's the latter, but I can't say that I've ever met anyone before they did porn, only during and after.
