even contract girls/guys are owned by their studios.

performers don't get much money from the DVDS, the performance or sells. most money is generated by merchandise, appearances and personal websites *money from advertising or memberships*

all secondary money is tied to a performers "brand" name recognition and familiarity. piss off the studio, and boom, you are cut off from your ability to earn income. at least in the industry.

the power structure is completely wonky. *kicks porn studios*

I've never met a female porn star, though I've met plenty of male ones who do gay porn. You are right about the lack of money: it's certainly not enough to actually live on, there's a very short shelf-life to performers who overproduce, and there are no residuals, at any rate. The money they earn making an individual "movie" is all they earn, period, even if a scene is subsequently marketed in a compilation or some other repackaging of the initial product (such as the internet).

Porn performers know the rules going in: they're there to be exploited and know it. That's one reason why lifestyle porn people tend to fall under personality types that I seldom find intriguing or compelling in any way. I won't say that they're sociopaths, but I will say that their low self-esteem is mirrored by a complete disregard for the feelings of others, at least in most cases. The guys I've met tend to be pretty damaged human beings.

The big question is whether their damage was a result of working in the industry or whether the industry attracts damaged people. IMO it's the latter, but I can't say that I've ever met anyone before they did porn, only during and after.

i dont watch porn for the chicks.. i love me some James Deen
:yup: Although he disagrees, I swear I know his cock double, hehe.

I know usually they are just considered dirty sluts and do-anything-for-money prostitutes, only there for the instant sexual gratification and amusement of men, which is unfortunate but that's the way our society likes to judge. It would be nice if they could be considered something along the lines of "erotic performers" but that was discussed in the last thread..I want to know, does their abilities and acting deserve more credit?
Unfortunate these attitudes exist, but there you go.
Can't say I give them credit for the reasons you mentioned, but have found most of the women I worked with to be tough, scrappy broads and I respect their choices, even though I would not make the same for myself.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of female James Deen fans, he is one of the few guys in mainstream porn who seems like he actually wants the women to enjoy shooting the scene (and doesn't try to choke anyone).

Some good responses in this thread. I also think that the industry attracts certain kinds of people that allow themselves to be abused, or that have low self-esteem and "rolled into it" through people that want to take advantage of them, or that are simply in it for the money. Often people with no self-respect, or shallow people. Those aren't the kind of people that deserve more credit then they get, I think. Those go either into the category I pity, or in the category I resent.

But there are a few gems out there. The ones that simply just really enjoy having sex on camera. People that make you forget those cameras are even there. When they want their partners to enjoy it as much as they do, and have the skills to read what they're into and act on it. When they respect the other one they're shooting a scene with (regardless of what kind of person that is).
Those people don't get the credit they deserve. Being in that kind of business, and staying yourself, takes a strong person. There are some performers I really look up to and think "wow". Definitely not only female ones.
