I personally doubt that Darwinian sexual selection had a lot to do with the size of a man's penis because of how it functions based upon a power inequality in the mate selection process.
As I'm sure you realize, female peacocks are "plain" because they are the ones who choose who gets to mate, forcing the males to compete. The females are the ones who shaped the appearance of the males over time. In peacocks is the females with the power to choose which genes were passed on.
In human evolution, it was reversed. We were heavily influenced by sexual selection, however, the stronger and faster sex got to choose whom they mated with, so it's men who selected women and shaped our evolution, and shaped the evolution of women's bodies, probably not the other way around. It's why men's bodies are so functional, and women's bodies are... more like a peacock. (In general, men are so much more visual when it comes to sex and arousal. A holdover from the privilege of sexual selection? Part of the function of getting to choose the prettiest one?) To get crass about it, rape was how babies were probably made, which takes selection out of the hands of women entirely (except in instances of cuckolding). That lack of female reproductive power continued until very recently, when wives were essentially property. It's the reason why I suspect that social selection was a much stronger influence on the development of man's large penis, and not the sexual preferences of women. Women really weren't "allowed" to have preferences until just recently, first because of our relatively small size, and then after we formed societies, because we didn't have control over whom we were married to.
