I don't believe in god. I wouldn't say that there isn't one, but I just don't believe there is one.

Put a tick in the "not sure" box for me.

Actually no one knows for sure, (at least they can't prove it). I thought about putting that up as a choice, but decided against it.

I would say that not sure is Yes, (but you are not sure).

The ones that say no are sure of their answer.

No I don't believe in God, I think God is a coping mechanism because we can't face the knowledge of extinction after death.

Extinction would be the easy part. It's the possibility of hell that I have a problem with. That's what scares me. Maybe there really is a hell. I don't
guess anyone knows for sure.

If I knew for sure there was no heaven and no hell, I would probably have been extinct years ago...

I don't understand the question.

We all used to believe that we were part of the great cosmic creation. Then someone figured out that controling that other part of the human experience, that part that is beyond the senses, would be a really good power to exert over people when we became civilised. They called it their god, the one true god and anyone else's god was a bad and naughty thing and was a good reason to go and smack their bottoms and take their things and why we are always right and they are always wrong.

Then they created a name for those of us who just didn't sign up to their game, and we are bad and we won't have cookies when we die.

Touchy subject! But maybe because 'believers' suspect themselves of being on shaky ground and so get agitated when challenged. So ... a couple of questions: "Why do you believe?" and "How do you know?".

I will give a wavering No.
I'm a Buddhist so in fact don't have any belief in 'God.'
But I'm not sure that there isn't a great intelligent force, utterly beyond my ken, whose presence and operation isn't a necessary starting point for everything I see (and don't see, and can't imagine).
I'm just reading Bryan Sykes' Adam's Curse, which among other things talks about all the various ways that creatures have reproduced.
In part, implicitly, it's an argument for evolution.
But reading all about DNA, chromosomes, all the intricacies of genetic transmission of what we are ... yes, I do occasionally have that 'a-ha' moment of believing this whole world can't just be an adventitious burp from the belly of random chance.
But maybe it could.
I have no real clue.
I voted No.
