Silence is Boring

A guy joins a monastery and takes a vow of silence: he's allowed to say two words every seven years.
After the first seven years, the elders bring him in and ask for his two words. "Cold floors," he says. They nod and send him away.
Seven more years pass. They bring him back in and ask for his two words. He clears his throats and says, "Bad food." They nod and send him away.
Seven more years pass. They bring him in for his two words. "I quit," he says.
"That's not surprising," the elders say. "You've done nothing but complain since you got here."

Positive: Small talk often leads to meeting interesting people with whom you might find a lot in common. If you find yourself enjoying the conversation more with each minute, this is a good sign.

Negative: Small talk can lead to meeting uninteresting people with whom you have little to nothing in common. If you find yourself making excuses to leave, well...

I live in an area where civility is still a common part of society. It is a respect of one human towards another. It makes life a little less hard. You are human, I am human, we are in this together. Why not make it a little more pleasant? I have seen people who are down smile, and lift their heads because someone spoke to them. I guess it is a little easier for me because of where I live, and I grew up in such an enviroment.

I actually enjoy small talk. It helps the day go by a little quicker. I can't really stand rambling though. When people go on and on about nothing. When they just will not shut up or leave it alone. Even after they've gotten their point across they still just keep going on and on and on and on and on. :p

Actually, it is not. I was raised to be civil towards other people. It is part of our culture. It doesn't matter your wealth, gender or race. We were all taught civility.
If you knew some of my coworkers, you'd know they aren't civil. ewwww Nasty Nasty attitudes. We have a few beachs, and some beaches working at the Post Office.

I'm apparently really good at small talk, but I don't like having to sustain it. Silence is a lot more comfortable for me.

mailmen as I understand are given X amount of time to make there round, long winded people are a pain when you have to get something done.

We are constantly monitored. They have scan points we must scan at certain times. If you aren't there within the time frame allowed, you must give an account for it. Plus, long winded people are a pain, and we all know where the pain is located.

I can have a natter with just about anyone when the mood strikes.

Though under certain circumstances I find myself coming back to a perennial favorite like "Fuck off!"
