You bring me up as an example, but what you said is basically what I said. In my post, I would have said the same thing ("Get over your fucking selves") to Christians who drill the bible into others' heads and judge atheists for not believing in God. The only thing is, that particular direction of attack hasn't occurred in this thread, so I didn't feel it was relevant to mention - but it is no different. Bigotry is bigotry.

Please note that I am not judging an Atheist and calling him a bigot... I am calling people's intolerant attitudes for different beliefs in general as bigotry. Saying that seemed completely redundant, but I can see where arguments for calling me a hypocrite can be made and I am counteracting that now.

I knew this was gonna be a loaded thread after I replied to it. Religion is always loaded due to varying opinions no matter what the top is.

I didn't mean that you were one of the problems, Cath, just was trying to point out that you had gotten fed up with the attitude from some of the people who were posting. I meant that I was agreeing with some of what you said, sorry hon ^^;

mmm apart from that, have experienced quite a few thunder / lightning storms in Aus (far more common than here), and those electrical storms in Sydney, no where to go in that concrete jungle, hence the man made storm water drains ba rely coping, unlike the beautiful one i was in, much further down the south coast of NSW between Ulladulla n Batemans Bay close to r Kiola, i think.
Was so amazed wi the spectacular free show, lasted 3 hours odd, i stopped car and dreamed ha, despite the danger
A big difference when the lightning can discharge in the raw earth, or ocean huh'

remember praying, to no one in particular....'shit i hope that lightning doesnt hit me'

many electrical storms follow a path where the lightning is attracted to the iron content in the soil. Where the soil is red (volcanic) and contains a high iron content you will have more ground strikes. So, try not to get caught out in the open over red soil....or the soil might become redder :)

I'd never thought about that, but it seems plausible. It might explain the opals in and around Coober Pedy.

Periodically. I think chances are that it's useless, but it's comforting and helps me organize my thought. And as long as the probability of prayer working is higher than 0.00000...%, why not. That said, I'm pretty solidly an atheist, so it's almost certainly really just a ritual for myself.

Don't know bout that one, although after a rainstorm it is supposed to be easier to find them, the ones on the surface annyway, when it washes away the dust. There is a well known Opal mining town just south of the Queensland, NSW border, mid northern NSW called Lightning Ridge....so, ya just never know :) They are a beautiful gem, in all variety of colours.

I could pray I find one. But if there was a judgement on prayers, and a balance to be kept, I think there are much more important prayers to be answered.

No, I don't believe in any supernatural process by which a prayer could have an effect, except to calm the person saying it. I do think a lot about problems and solutions and so on, but it's never directed to a deity or force or anything like a prayer is.

Sundays especially (to-day)
i tend to listen to a Christian radio, intensely, just a change from all the usual negative news etc
anyway, it still doesnt prompt me to Pray, mainly as i think the unanswered portions are soul destroying
i.e.
Natural disasters
Wars
Fckwits in Arab countries killing there own kind off, etc etc etc
(Chinas lack of human rights is taking a breather, since the A rab spring bizness....)
mods move this to politics??? hah

I'm pretty sure the OP didn't ask whether or not you believe that God exists. I would normally avoid that type of thread, and now I know to avoid this one.

You guys are so judgmental. I know to expect that someone will say something that irritates me, but who are you to judge someone as crazy or stupid for believing in something? It's called a faith for a reason. Get over your fucking selves.

Catharsis, you are right in that there are those of us, myself included, who are very critical and judgmental about some religious beliefs. In my case the main reason why is that some people in my extended family are catholics, and they are very conservative in their beliefs. They have harmed family relationships, keep preaching to those of us who are not catholic that we are evil sinners and all the rest. On top of that one of my uncles was sexually abused by a catholic priest when he was a little kid. It has taken him most of his adult life to get over that abuse. So from my POV the catholic church is corrupt and creates a lot of suffering...mostly psychologically for many people in my own family. I personally think the human race would be better off without the institutional catholic church. Any talk of prayer to a god or Jesus is just a trigger for these feelings in me.

Yes, I pray. To give thanks and appreciation for the things that are good in my life, to help others with their sickness or other difficulties, and prayers for mercy and grace for those that still suffer from drug or alcohol addictions, and for help to get through difficult times. Yes, I agree that we all need to preserve regardless of outcomes or seemingly unanswered prayers.
