I just got one today and it's great. I am going to Vegas next month and was gonna get one from the car rental company for $10 a day. Instead I got one today for $200. It has text to speech, which means that it announces the name of the streets that you are going to turn on. I used it straight from the store. If you choose to take your own shortcut it will even recalculate your route.

In a word NO. You can circumnavigate this Island in about 3 hours so there's no need. Apart from that the road systems and directions here change by the hour :mad:

I have one and I love it because I am morbidly direction-challenged.

Apparently, the only way to tell myself to get lost was to find myself first...

The guy I'm dating now has one and it can be nice especially moving to a new area or going somewhere new. I doubt I'll ever get one myself because I like to rely on general maps or figuring things out for myself.

my phone has google maps, and that helps if I have to go somewhere I have never been before, but usually I can just fake it and find it. ;)

but I tend to get lost a lot... ;)

Yes, I bought a Simrad CP32 recently. It's not portable though.

It's true. Who needs a GPS unit anyway? Real people don't need directions.

btw, what happens to all of you that have GPS units when those things break?

There is only one road out of here.

I do have a GPS , my father got it, he probably never used it, and I haven't either yet.

Edit: he did use it, his place at Chiniak Point, Cape Chiniak, Kodiak Island is 57.37.15N, 152.13.39W. It is ten years old, so it will give you your latitude and longitude, but not interface with any navigation system, probably.

I got a Garmin and I generally love it though quite a few times it chooses routes longer than they should be. My worst problem is with its disturbing tendency to want to dump me in really bad neighborhoods to get places. There is an avoidance menu which comprises things like U-turns, unpaved roads, toll roads, etc., but no menu choice for stay out of ghettos. Otherwise it works great and love its usefulness for local roads in unfamiliar places.

I had a portable GPS about 5 years ago. I did Geocaching and it was fun for a while. I didn't really use it for much else. I gave my GPS to a friend a few years ago.

I don't even know what a GPS portable navigation system is - is it a compass and an A-Z :)
