I'm not sure I'd like to live in a small town where everone knew your business.
Hahah, I used to be in that situation, too. I lived and taught school in a very small town. My house was on the corner of two of the "main" streets, so almost everyone in town drove past my house at least twice a day. And of course, in such a small town, people love to gossip.

My brother and sister-in-law came to visit (and bring a television I had bought) and since the drive back to where they lived was 175 miles, I said "just stay the night. We'll go rent a couple of movies, have a few beers, and you can drive back tomorrow". That was Friday evening. My brother, already with beer in hand, said "you and Karen go get the movie, I'll stay here and drink my beer." So, we went and got a couple of movies. They stayed, and left early Saturday morning.

When I got to work Monday morning, the librarian and the media center director were already "chatting" in the lounge area. After about two minutes, they just couldn't stand it any more. One of them said "We want to know whose black Camaro was parked at your house this weekend."

I figured someone had seen me with "the mystery woman" at the video store, so I figured I would just throw fuel on the flames. I told her

"I can't tell you her name... but if her husband comes around asking questions, don't tell him you saw her there."

I refused to elaborate or answer any more questions. Another couple of situations like that happened. They finally figured out that gossip just didn't work with me, and they left me alone.

I know all of my immediate neighbors by name, but we never do more than just say a simple "Hello" and "How are you?". It was different when I was little, though. Then, we knew all the neighbors on the block, and talked with them often. We'd go over to their houses and them to ours, borrowed and lent things to each other, caught rides with them to the store, all sorts of things. I remember, as a kid, spending hours standing with my mom at the fence as she talked with the neighbor lady from across the street. My parents also used to have our closest neighbors over to play cards, as us kids would play on the kitchen floor. This sort of closeness did have a downside, of course. Gossip, fights, disagreements and hurt feelings often occured. I remember my mom no longer speaking to one of our neighbors and us kids being told not to play with each other anymore. I also remember us kids starting fights between our parents whenever we'd get into fights. Overall, I think it's much better to know your neighbors only to a certain point. Lots of things change when the relationship goes from friendly to friends.

I live in a typical suburban neighborhood outside of Portland, Oregon.

I know most of my neighbors well and we get along fine. There are few inter-neighbor squabbles. Sometimes we have block parties together on Independence Day or Labor Day. We occasionally baby sit each other's kids and feed each other's pet cats and help each other out often. I value the smooth relationship I have with all of them.

My neighbors when I was a kid growing up were Italian - from Italy. I would always hang out at their house after school since I was a latch key kid and they would talk to me in Italian even though I didn't understand it at first, feed me biscotti, make me food to take home, have me work in their garden and give my Mom tons of home grown zucchini. They had plastic covering on all their furniture. I saw some great fights, lots of love and their Mom still calls me her boyfriend. God I loved those people. I hated eating the zucchini though. When I eat it now I think of them. I like it now.
