I have been in a small one bedroom apartment with a galley kitchen for 13 years. I live in Union County, we have rent control and the rent can only go up 3% a year. I now pay $705, heat (too much heat and I can't control it, I have the fan on because it's 84.2 degrees in my bedroom) and hot water included. I have a used car and with minimum liability only, it's about $600 a year.

Hah! That's soooo cheap man. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. And we have rent control. My rent is $875 per month. (If I were to rent this apartment today and not years ago it would be $975-$1000). And car insurance for me with minimum liability is a crippling $2,400 per year.

And I have to pay for all of my own gas and electric (heat is gas).

No wonder why you can save beaucoup bucks! If my car insurance and rent were as cheap as yours, I'd be living on easy street.

hahaha I remember those days.

Save $100 a week? Are you high? Very few people I know can do that. Actually off the top of my head just one of my friends does that.

I don't think a 100 a week is unrealistic for a single person with a half descent paying job.

Back when I was married and we had a kid and a mortgage, we were able to save a bit. We put aside 55$ a month for my daughter's education which compounded over 17 years to the point where we only need to pay her travel and rent costs.

ROTFLMAO, :biggrin1: OMFG! No wonder, you are so smug. You're living the dream life dude!

I left NJ in June of this year. I had a 900 sq. ft. apartment in Lawrenceville (Mercer County) for which I paid $955 a month. This included heat; but not electric. Insurance on my 1991 Cadillac Eldorado which I paid $904 for in March 2006 was $1800 a year for just liability. I still owe a little over $105,000 on my student loans. If it's still around I will collect my first social security check 3 years before I pay off my student loans.:rolleyes::frown1:

I am a recovering compulsive shopper. I have not had any credit card debt in four years. Before you jump on my back I was never the keep up with the Jones' type. I just have very expensive taste. :rolleyes:When I buy gifts, I purchase things appropriate to the recipient. I do not mince on quality just because it's not for me. I would rather pay more for a well fitting, classically styled garment which will last for 20 years, than to buy some trendy crap at a discount store that falls apart in 4 washings. I'm a coupon clipper and avid bargain shopper.

If my car insurance and rent were as cheap as yours, I'd be living on easy street. Shit, if my living expenses were as cheap as his I'd still be in New Jersey!

I live paycheck to paycheck. I never used to. I had a job that was like golden handcuffs. It paid really well but I hated my life and the job.

So, I moved to the most expensive place I could find because it has the school I wanted to attend to become what I've always wanted to be, a psychotherapist. I was 32. Now I'm 37, almost 38, and in major student loan debt and consumer debt. I graduated with honors and I'm in intern earning hours toward licensure, which takes years. I'm happier than I ever was. I'm doing what I know I'm meant to do.

I will be consumer debt free by the time I'm 40ish. The student loans will nag me probably through retirement. I'm willing to pay that price because the school was that good and there was no other way to finance it...

So, life is for the living. Money doesn't do you any good once your dead. So, money should be spent by the living.

I'm no longer the tightwad cheapo I used to be. I live within my means these days, I always have even while racking up the debt. If you looked at my consumer debt it was used to pay for frivolous things like utilities, rent, auto insurance, gasoline, food, and school supplies. Nothing is cheap here where I live. That buried me.

Oh and I worked full time while going to grad school full time. I even took overtime. Still that didn't make ends meet.

If I moved somewhere else though I know I could get a job that pays similarly and live like a king. But I'm not done with my licensing. I'm going to finish to get a California license because it'll make it easier to get a license in another state where the cost of living isn't so insane. At least that's one of my plans... We'll see... I just might stay, who knows...

I think it is unfortunate how the federal student loan program saddles graduates with debt, it should be primarily grants.

And I have to pay for all of my own gas and electric (heat is gas). But you live in perpetually, sunny California!!

LOL! Last night it got down to 36°F here in sunny Oakland. And today it's 55°F at the moment (much better). But tonight it's going back down to 43°F. And all I have is a crummy little heater on the wall in my livingroom. The heat barely reaches my bedroom. And the insulation here in my building (like most buidings here) is non-existant. So I pay through the nose for heat because I might as well be heating the world outside!

I don't know why it's this cold this early and it's been chilly for a while here. We aren't used to temps this low, actually. That's why I have no damn insulation and a crummy little heater! LOL! :biggrin1:

Oh and I'm in foggy Coastal Northern California. Well, Oakland is better than San Francisco. At least we do see the sun occasionally.

I didn't think I would but I've been treating myself a lot this month. I have about £200 left to last me til 1st January.

And still more stuff I want to buy. Must...resist...

But I do need a guitar amp. No point having an electric guitar with no amp!
