I completely relate to the gent above, where he and his buddy are both only children and have adopted each other as brothers, basically ... I could've written those exact paragraphs, pretty much. I too have that adopted brother, and when we do see each other, we hug all the time; when we can't, there's always an "I love you" or two over the phone. There's probably a degree to where we're making up for stuff we didn't already have growing up, but it's also true that we're both affectionate guys in the first place and are sort of relieved not to have to explain it (gay guys must really go through hell with this sometimes, is my impression, not that a gay man and a straight man can't be pals, but especially when young there must be a whole separate set of expectations and barriers up).
I think I said before, I'll hug pretty much anybody at least once; sometimes that's all the other person needs. I think a lot of people of any sexual persuasion acquiesce to the sex act simply to fulfill what they really want, just to be held for a while.
