I don't see how me smoking effects you? Are you walking straight behind smokers with your mouth agap, hoping to fill your lungs with cigarette smoker?

Here's a tip, don't stand next to a smoker. He isn't effecting you unless you're right next to him, and trust me they're easy to spot and avoid.

(Hint: They're the ones smoking.)
Do you know I can't be sober in Las Vegas? As someone allergic to cigarette smoke, I have about two days before my symptoms become intolerable and I have to take anti-histamines. Can you imagine walking around that place high? It's... odd and uncomfortable. It was novel the first time, but it's not a place to have your computation skills impaired, your judgement impaired, and when the sounds and colors are enhanced, it can be overwhelming. The only way for me to enjoy that city is to stay away from the casinos.

The constant smoking is my least favorite thing about Europe as well.

You do not have to be standing right next to a smoker to be breathing in their noxious fumes. You can be accross the room. You can be down the street. One only needs to be downwind.

You believe you have a right to smoke. I believe you should be permittedt the privelige of a cigarette only inside a private residence, and a private vehicle, and only with the windows and doors closed in both cases. Second-hand smoke does kill. And frankly, you shoud ask my permission to smoke in my presence.

Ganga, good for you!

I've never smoked but I'm totally convinced it's a bitch to quit. If you need any encouragement from a militant anti-smoker, let me know.

Thanks. It is hard, a craving for a cigarette and not having one is like being thirsty and having nothing to drink. I think I have been doing pretty good so far. I'm planning on being completely finished with cigarettes before October.

Well in the UK, it's illegal to smoke in enclosed spaces so you'd never have to worry about being inside and smoking. But to be honest, I'm still going to spark up outside I wish, but if someone were to ask me to move away or just step in a different direction, I will. I still believe it's my right to harm my body in whatever way I wish.

No you're an addict making lame excuses.

Second hand smoke is safer than second hand radiation. But why even bother?

My younger brother's girlfriend died from complications from smoking. The unpleasant "remove the jaw" surgery to prolong life another month or so. She'd had cancer, went into remission, but would not/ could not stop smoking.
The remission fizzled.

Harm away.

I have to disagree, ZOS, and I've never been a smoker.

It doesn't matter if someone is an addict, or what reasons or excuses they have for being so. It is still their body, for which they should retain the rights. It's no different then a diabetic who continues to eat chocolate, or a person with high blood pressure and heart problems who continues to go to McDonalds. As long as they are not harming another they should be able to do as they wish.

We all have things that we disagree with, that we believe others should or shouldn't do. Frankly, I believe video games are very harmful to children and would love to see them banned, but that doesn't mean I have the right to force that on someone else.

I understand your passion, but if we start taking away the rights of one group, it leads to another, and then it's only a matter of time before we all begin to lose freedoms that are valuable to ourselves.

Yes, I smoke. Yes I know how bad it is for me.
I like smoking,no I Love smoking!
Cigars!
I Love most, big fat Maduro, Cuban, Dominican, or Nicaraguan cigars!
Aww baby! I could come from smoking a really fine, Padron 1926 maduro
cigar! Did I mention I also smoke Kools?
You know, 'cos I'm like, Cool! Man!
cigarbabe:saevilw:
p.s.
I also have asthma, bronchitis and have had half a lung removed.
It wasn't from smoking though, before you start castigating me. *sigh*
I also read in the NEJM ( no it was the U.K. version of said journal) that there have been no sanctioned studies
that prove second hand smoke is harmful or that it causes "cancer". Yes it can be harmful if your allergic like AE.
Unfortunate for you,AE, but it is my right to smoke and be outdoors. When people ask me to move when I'm outdoors
I always refuse( most times).why should I have to leave because you hate smokers or smoking?
The government has taken many of our civil liberties and this is another one I don't have.

Cigarbabe, yum!

I just finished smoking a Gran Habana Gran Robusto #3 Habano. It's Honduran. It was pure heaven. I only smoke like one per week, maybe two.

It doesn't matter if someone is an addict, or what reasons or excuses they have for being so...

If a diabetic is nearby, gorging, binging, overdosing on chocolate cake, or the cardiac patient drags me to McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, White Castle, and the local greasy spoon and asks me to watch them pig out, I am unharmed. MY rights do not get violated. But if a smoker excercises his privelage (it's not a right!) to smoke in my presence, my rights are being violated. Give him his cancer sticks, but force him to do it only inside his own home and vehicle. Let him poison himself where it has nothing to do with me. I also advocate special bars for smokers only. Just like it is only legal here to drink alcohol in a bar, or at home, it should be similarly so for smokes.

This post mirrors many of my own sentiments on the subject, thank you.

Which is why I wrote "as long as they are not harming another" in my post. And I have to say I have never heard of a smoker tying someone down on the street and smoking on them.

If you smoke near people you are harming them. Period.

First of all, for me to believe that it means that I will have had to buy into the second hand smoke movement. I'm not saying that I don't, but for every study someone brings up that it is harmful, another study says it is not. It's kind of like global warming. What you believe is going to depend on your life experiences, environment, research, etc.. Because of this, it's not a debate I ever get into with either side, as it all comes down to who you believe and it's a non-ending cycle.

However, I do believe that if a smoker is standing out on a sidewalk, smoking a cigarette on public property for which they pay for with their taxes just as you and I do, and someone walks up and stands next to them, the smoker has the right to continue smoking.

I also believe that if someone owns a business and they want it to be smoking, that should also be their right. A customer has the right to go somewhere else. The same goes for a smoker in their home or vehicle.

I do have an issue with smoking around children, but that's not the arguement here. Most adults, unless they cannot physically move for some reason, have the ability to walk away.

Again, I have NEVER smoked, and my parents didn't smoke.

So, if a person is within the law and not harming anyone, i.e. they are not holding anyone captive and smoking on them, they are, again, by law, within their RIGHTS, which was the basis of my arguement. The rest of us have the RIGHT to move.

Ah--sort of...addicts make all kinds of excuses to allow them to continue on their path. Like people on herion, cocaine, meth, alcohol, pot and some damn such. Wossnuts. Part of this is that some things like tobacco, as presented by the companies, has absolutely no use what so ever and never had any use. Some of the additives they use are heavy metals which have routinue;y been shown to cause cancer.

The only thing tobacco had going for it was the following: when it was introduced the the 1500's, people didn't bathe much. Tobacco made them smell better.

Tobacco has no value.

It's part of the economic infrastruction in the USA, and people are stuck with it for a while.

McDonald's ought to be barred from pandering to children in the way it has done for decades.

By the way, The McDonald's company does not allow "fat" people in their commercials. Ever.

They know. And always have.
