Do you think if Al Gore had run this time he would be in the lead?

I do, and I prefer him to any of the current candidates.

I definitely don't think the lead. I'd say third possibly second. He has gained some momentum in the past few years with his Oscar winning documentary and Nobel Peace Prize. He's had publicity you can't buy.

Unless of course he is given the ultimate power at the convention as they attempt to bring the two sides together.

I really don't see it getting to the convention. Like it or not, Obama will be close enough to being the nominee that it won't get to that.

Also, if there is a floor fight at the convention nominating someone who was never in the race to begin with is a sure-fire bet to loosing an election.

The more the merrier I say, Gore as an option would be an alternative, worthy of at least hearing out. In 2K8, he definitely comes off as separate from the Clintons, seeing how they'd be running against each other. In 2000, he was on the heels of 8 years of Bill & Hillary.
