Well, the last ten years or so have proven that this can be anybody's electronic Sanctum Sanctorum, so yes it is a little of both.
I suppose if you owned the sites Bigger.com and Better.com and put them together it becomes Biggeran.......... Well, it led to another porn site, surprise surprise

PS, I mean, if you wanted to take a way out view of it, it's a decision maker. You can decide if you want to become lost in porn, lost in love, lost in science... lost in religion, gaming, gambling or whatever. I find it difficult myself at times to leave the pc, I use the excuse of procrastination, but maybe it is mild addiction. It would be easy to imagine a master controller, as in Tron amongst all the flotsam of the net, watching everything you do, placing the pop ups as distraction, finding out your urges and wants, needs....I think it will be controlled one day, I don't think it will be avoidable, by whom or what is the concern.

Bigger is always better right?? The internet has reached its growth peak and is now shrinking slowly and as it shrinks it will cool and become a body of dense mass and will draw energy into itself just like a black hole, just typing at my keyboard could be sufficient for me to be dragged into this vortex of death and AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRgggggggghhhhhhhhhh...................
It's about to get destroyed if Congress passes SOPA. On top of that, in the next 5 years, most ISP's will not only be charging for speed, but they'll also be charging for data usage...we're all about to get fucked by the wealthy once again. WRITE YOUR CONGRESS PERSON
In college the town I lived in only had one ISP, and they charged for data usage. It was terrible. Our bills were over $250 a month for basic cable and internet. They kept saying we were going over our data limit, but we could not figure out how or why. They told us it was most likely a P2P program on one of our computers, but we all uninstalled every P2P program on our computers and it still didn't fix the problem. On top of that, there was no way to monitor how much data we were using on a daily basis. We are all about to get screwed, and not in the good way

I have Comcast and the cable/internet bills run over $100/month easy. I feel I'm getting screwed. The smart phone bill is even more of a rip off especially for very slow connection speeds because the one cell is so clogged up in my area.
But there is a very limited bandwidth for everyone and the highest payer gets the biggest sliver. Sorry poor folks your days of affordable access to the web are numbered.
Whoa.... that's expensive. I was paying the equivalent of $73.00 for ADSL with no limits and Sat TV and thought it was to much. I just switched fiber optic internet (50Mbps unlimited) and TV combined for about $42.00.
Oh.. that includes a landline phone I'll never use as well.

It seems like there are several business models that will also get screwed by this...such as Netflix? I'm certainly not knowledgeable about the net, but I would think there would be some corporate efforts to stop this in addition to individuals.

I find it fascinating that no one has mentioned how much better-designed most websites are now compared to 10-15 years ago. I find it a much more enjoyable experience now that it was in the late 90s, when my dial-up connection would take five+ minutes to load a garish, hideous page full of hyperactive crawls, lurid, vivid colors, a plethora of fonts and intrusive, unwanted, blaring "music".
