Yesterday I went to the doctor. One of the things I went to discuss with him was left testicular pain. He knows I am a cyclist. He asked me if I wear a jock when I ride my bike. I thought, wow, is he old world. Nobody wears a jock when they cycle. What a way to create chafing. Might be time for him to learn a thing or two.

Oh .... what do you wear then ? I’m
not a cyclist but. I use my bike often, I use a pouch under my biking shorts, I can’t have my junk swing all over the place, and I’ve sat on the boys a couple times wen stupidly decide to go comando .. not a good idea ...!

I'm sure his question had more to do with the cause of your pain than anything to do with fashion. My experience proves to answer the questions as honestly as you know and help him help you with your pain.

I told him that serious cyclists do not wear jocks. They don't wear anything under their shorts or bibs. I understand the generation he comes from. He's a bit older than I, but we are a part of the same "jockstrap generation." We wore them all the time. I remember wearing them to play tennis, to run, to play baseball (with cup), to swim. I recall buying a jock whose package had a golfer on it. I didn't wear one to golf, but I did when I first started wearing a jock use it to ride my bike with. That was more about the jock, than the cycling. It made me feel manly. I remember when I was in high school the football team hanging their jocks on the fence outside of the school to dry. I remember basketball players and other athletes hanging their jocks in their lockers for everyone to see. So I understand the generation he came from. But I worried that asking me that question reflected that he might be back in the day in terms of his medical care. I actually do wear jocks once in a while, but certainly not to cycle. The chafing would be awful.

Some people do wear jocks while cycling and suffer no chaffing issues. Me.
His question is valid and is part of an effort to rule out causes of your pain.
I’m assuming a physical exam occurred and perhaps a referral to a urologist for an ultrasound.

The brand name Bike came from the fact that jockstraps were first worn by cyclists to prevent what you are experiencing. I think it was a tradeoff of testicle pain vs. chaffing. It wasn't until later jockstraps were adopted by other athletes.

I think his medical training does not reflect the generation his is coming from, Doctors, and Lawyers . we are update constantly on what is the new treatments, as Lawyers what is the new Laws, or changing in the laws it depends of our own particular practice. Is called continue education, in order to get re-certify or update our licenses, he is probably a PCP.. or general practitioner (family doctor) that’s all, he must referred you to a specialist.

yes, I am having an ultrasound. yes, I knew about the origin of the Bike jockstrap, And actually I have been one who still uses jocks, contrary to current styles. I like them much better than compression shorts. Truthfully, my pain often comes when I wear boxer briefs or something similar.

i would sorry more about what our current mindset on fashion over function has done to our bodies. Old school train of thought isnt always bad. He has all the modern tools to diagnose i am sure, but the basics are the basics.

When jockstraps were mandatory and issued we had less heat strokes, less heat stress related health issues with athletes, higher testosterone levels. The more stable and higher our T levels are the more tolerant our bodies are of things that make us dizzy, cause nose bleeds and many other things. When guys were told to shower in the locker room we had less colds and sickness, less absences from school, and MRSA hadn't really been an issue in a school locker room.

All things looked at as old school today, but important in previous generations. We need all this modern approach to medicine and health to combat things that modesty and modern approach to babying our kids has caused.

I wear them when I cycle with no chafing issues. Back in the late1980s and early 1990s when I was in high school they were required for PE and sports. During the summer i wear them as underwear because it is almost like going commando but without my junk flopping around. LOL

I'm a long time mountain biker. I always go commando in bike shorts. Now, I too had a dull ache in my balls that I had looked at years ago. The doc said it was the veins causing the discomfort. I switched to a pouched style underwear for day to day and poof... No more ball ache. The pouch kind of wraps around them for support.

I would wear a jock when cycling if I could. The jock absolutely does its job supporting my junk but the junction of the pouch and the but straps rubs me raw. Its no doubt that the boys need some support so I rely on a good pair of bib shorts.

Same here, bib shorts are the best for road cycling!

I have worn jockstraps back in my biking days. I never did racing or marathons, but I would bike to work in the summer, which was about 10 miles each direction. Never had a problem with chafing. I also grew up in the day when EVERYONE wore a jockstrap for PE and sports. Compression shorts did not even exist.
