I do not believe in a Supreme Being, but the above quoted paragraph is one of the reason why, I think, God was invented by Man. Faith is a powerful thing and should never be held in contempt. I also believe that diety and religion were created to 1) explain the disasters we face, and 2) throughout human history, to give political leaders (from the head of the Clan to the President of the United States) their power and moral authority.

Now I believe that Gods and God came about in order to fill in the gaps of human knowledge. At tbeir essence, humans are explorers and seekers of "truth". However their limited knowledge and understanding left too many unknowns. An all knowing Creator can provide answers to the black matter. Unfortunately, if you've just created an all powerful being you better treat him right lest he smite you down. Thus the creation of religion or as I like yo think of it, an historical "bad day".

Yes just because the religious right does not practice Christianity, in other words does not adhere to even Christ asked of Christians, like for instance:

I have pretty much embraced atheism since I was very young. Being brought up by atheist parents and having limited exposure to religion has helped, but I personally don't have a problem with religion as long as I don't have to confront it.

Although I try to respect different cultures, I don't exactly have high regard for many religions.

Your heart argues with your mind all the time. It's only when they agree you are at peace and one with yourself. Or you self destruct.

And if you have faith in what you can not see, have faith in your own emotions and thoughts, because they can not be seen either, but felt. Yet most of the conflict in the world is caused by these things you can not see, but know are there.
