When preparing a special dish for a gathering, whether it be appetizers for a super bowl party, or special dessert for family gathering?

Do you use "store-bought" ingredients (such as a cake mix, prepared dip, or pie crusts) and claim your dish is "homemade"?

I was just watching something on a cooking channel where a team used a store bought pie crust for their "homemade dessert". Hmmmm... not quite, or... is it?

Or would you think, yeah ... as long as I baked it, it is homemade?

I always prepare my special treats from scratch. Taking a dish to a party/gathering is a treat for me, as well as the other guests. I want them to have a taste of something special, not something they can buy at the store.

Just wondering. What are your thoughts?

Just call me Betty....

I try to always do things from scratch, but I guess that's the way I've been raised.

I have cheated in the past but only as a last resort.

I wouldn't look down on nor wish anyone to look down on me for 'cheating'.

Food is to be enjoyed regardless of where its from, I think its the fact people have tried and give it with love that counts.

This is why i love Costco and BJ's. The have Hors d'oeuvre packaged and ready to pop in the oven, gourmet salad in a bucket and pasta in a bag. Wine from all over the world at discount prices. They have everything.

I'm not "looking down" on anyone. I just want to know what people think.

If the food isn't prepared from scratch, I wouldn't consider it homemade. Some store-bought items are just better, so I wouldn't judge someone for going that route. However, if they tried to pass it off as homemade and I found out, I would tease them for the rest of their lives.

I am terrible in making cakes..I would sure cheat on that one.

I prefer to buy my deserts, if let for me I'll always have Cheesecake Factory Titamisu.

I have an ex-bf who still laugh to this day at my idea..when I bought the whole meal at the restaurant and pretended I cooked it all myself.

depends on the gathering...

my malchicks are pretty much bears in underpants. *some are bears sans underpants*
they want food, and heaps of it.
for them i'll cobble together a table of from scratch and box mixes.
unless i'm experimenting with a new dish.
me malchicks are test bears

me lady friends..
i do go out a bit more.
cuz they know quality.. menu is strictly homemade and fancy
usually something i found on some obscure epicurean blog
we're talking foraging in specialty shops for that one ingredient of doom

mixed company..
i opt for homemade classic ease foods.
hmm the food compliments the company.. isn't the focus?
*does that make sense*

unless a pre-made/store bought item is requested i avoid if possible.
the upside.. i know how to make heaps of food i might not tackle on my ownsome.
and thanks to adventurous friends.. i've had foods curiosity alone wouldn't have put on my plate.

I used to rely on store-bought items a lot. Now I have this wonderful caterer who has the best pie crusts and croisants. I never say it's homemade, though. But people usually think it is because it tastes that way. Am I wrong not to correct an unexpressed impression? I think not.

Kid's got lots of allergies. If we cheat, we end up stabbing the bugger with an eppypen or getting all Squad 51 to the Emergency Room.

Only if they ask.. "Did you make this?"

My mom in law caters everything. The first time she passed it off as if she prepared the entire meal. Of course, those of us who know "she does NOT cook" knew that she did not prepare it. And my husban still teases her about "that awesome creamed corn."

I don't mind buying pre-made foods or even taking short cuts if I don't have the time or just in general don't feel like cooking. I would prefer to make it all from scratch so I can control what goes into the final product.

I normally cook from scratch for small groups but if its larger than say 10 people I then incorporate time/step saving methods. Never would I ever let the main dish be store bought. Unless of coarse were having people over for a football and its something like pizza.
If my wife is cooking, your going to get some store bought stuff in there somewhere. She isn't about to miss a gym session or Bravo because some food needs to be cooked.

:eek:mfg::no1:...I always make everything from scratch. (I even make my own mayonnaise, pickles, preserves and can my own vegetables and tomato sauce) I think things taste better and they really don't take that much less time (I can make a homemade pie crust in the time it takes you to go to the store to buy one and come home and unwrap it)
I can taste the difference... and to me it's a big enough difference that it's not worth it to take a short cut. I just looked in my pantry and the only thing I have in a tin is Lyles's Golden Syrup and the only thing store bought in a jar is Skippy Peanut Butter.
My version of a short cut if last minute company is coming for dinner is thawing out a pie and dinner rolls from the freezer.

Always Cheat!
No shame@!
Family & Sis-in-laws can create ALL the home made Goodies they want, and they do.
I am notorious for a common ole Sarah Lee Cheesecake Dessert, or and a 2 litre Ice Cream
usually all gets consumed, by the kids anyway haha

funny
4year old commented re her Grandmothers home made blueberry dessert the other night ..

Whats the Pudding like ...?

WHAT!! you don't hand grind your peanuts, Dr. Nudie? each one with a tiny little mortar and pestle? adding them one at a time to an antique cut glass jar?

You are not the first person to say this but as far as peanut butter goes I actually prefer Skippy over homemade. Can I redeem myself by saying I make my own salad dressing?
