I'm only in my late 30s and feel I've been here too long.I bear in mind I have a good life and I try to be grateful but can't get rid of the feeling of how point!less existence is especially my own. I try and find things to enjoy and get excited about but everything feels overrated and overhyped. What frustrates me about this life is how repetitive and tedious it is I admire those who truly love life but I dont think I ever will. I don't hate anyone just feel life is boring as fuck

Does anyone else feel the sameway?

No. All the struggles, all the laughs, all the anger and pain, the happiness, the mistakes and the successes, all of it has been and continues to be worth continuing to wake up each morning.

Hopefully you get there too. Maybe talk to someone? I did. Still do. It didn't fix anything, but it gave me tools I didn't have to cope with negative thoughts and feelings.

I’ve been there, man. Just stick with it. Things get better.

I feel a lot similar. The past 4 years feels like the biggest thing I feel is apathy. I’m just unmotivated and apathetic to what feels like mostly everything and I don’t know how to break the cycle of feeling that way. Went on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds but still it doesn’t make the apathy go away. I think the worst part is I just don’t know what makes me feel this way.

What makes you happy, if only for a moment? Working out? Movies? Sex? Video games? In order to unpack why you’re numb, it’s good to start with what helps you to feel and work backwards.

Thing is, I’d done things that make me happy. But it just ends up making me put off the work I need to do but am unmotivated to do.

I’m not suggesting that you simply do more of what makes you happy. Just that you might be able to find a deeper commonality amongst those things and capitalize on that.

Well the one common thread I’ve noticed with myself is that the things I enjoy most in life are things which serve as a creative outlet for me. I have a huge imagination and sometimes it feels like if I don’t get to express my creativity, I feel like it dies and rots inside me. But on the other hand, I feel like if I don’t do what I’m expected to do and do other things then I’m letting everyone else down, so I sort of just don’t do anything...

I’ve definitely been there. What is your preferred outlet for creative expression?

That doesn't sound like apathy, it sounds like burnout, frankly.

Hmm writing stories or playing dungeons and dragons where I get to embody a character I’ve made. Used to write lots of poetry and draw in high school, don’t know why I don’t really do those anymore.

I mean you are probably right. But I feel almost unworthy of feeling burnout, like I procrastinate all the time, so what would I be burnt out from? Others work much harder than I do and somehow still manage to chug along, why can’t I? Worse yet, I can’t take time off. I’m on an international student visa, the moment I stop going to school full-time is the moment I get told by the country to pack my bags and go back home. I can’t really do that since I’ve built my life up here...I don’t really have anything to go back to.

If you were to set aside some time every week - perhaps an hour - solely to write stories or poetry, I think it would help. Even if you weren’t happy with your output. You’d be engaging with part of your brain that has laid dormant for a while. It can be invigorating. And it sounds like you’re very busy these days, so you may not have much more time than that. But surely an hour a week isn’t unreasonable.

It may help some to try exercising. Particularly running, if you can. It can give you endorphins easily.

Also, you can set up goals, like running a 5k, 10k, half marathon... you'll be absorbed reading about techniques, training...

Joining a choir is another nice one. Because music plays with several parts of your brain. You also meet people.

If you have the means, or can work towards it, traveling is another one that keeps me excited. So many things to do.

Hiking is also a big high. If you're in the USA, there are so many wonderful hikes! PCT, CDT, AT, just to quote the big ones, which you can do in sections, or in one long go.

Then, there's volunteering. At home at soup programs that feed others, or even taking part in a project digging wells for clean water in Africa.

I think we have all gone though this in our life. You say you are on a student Visa, Well that's a big accomplishment!
Worrying about how you hate life is no where as devastating to people that love you if you were not here.
Keep up your studies as this will define you in the years to come.
When you are feeling down, Just remember the people that cherish you!
