Question for the Japanese guys on here, gay/straight/bi/whatever. Does cruising happen in onsens in Japan? And if so, how? Be great to hear some stories.

I love visiting onsens/straight bathhouses around the world, and Japan has some really massive ones. I haven't seen much go on though, obviously because it's very risky and is a public spot. But I just want to know if the gay/bi guys cruise at onsens. Surely it would be tempting?! haha

It doesn’t. Totally unlike how Americans have turned spas and even Asian-style spas in the US as a gay bathhouse instead.

In Japan, it’s literally a family set up, and when I go, sometimes I would witness adult dads wash their kids. All in nude. All with no malice. The vibe, mood, and overall crowd just do not participate if ever someone would go there to look for some cruising action.

So I’m answering my own question, I’ve been to a couple of large sentos around Tokyo, and while it is uncommon, I have witnessed a bit of cruising. Once, a Japanese guy was obviously hard in a steam room, and I noticed a lot of looking from the younger crowd. I was also felt up by a couple of Japanese guys in the spa pool.

What I wanted to know is if any Japanese guys cruise at these places? Most of the replies here are from white guys.

I think you confuse onsen bathhouse as “gay bathhouse” in Japan.

Onsens, as your question asked, are family centric places and cruising does not happen. But if you’re instead asking if cruising ever happens at Japanese gay “bathhouses,” then yes for sure it does. Japan has gay bathhouses 100%!!! 24 Kaiken comes to mind. Or Jin-Ya. Those are known gay Japanese onsen. And mostly not a place where families go.

And cruising does happen at onsens, it's just extremely subtle and undercover.

My hotel has onsen where there is some very subtle cruising. I met a fellow bather in the elevator after noticing his erection as he dressed. He asked about my stay, whether I had a nice room so I asked him the same. He said ‘yes, would you like to see my room?’ By then he was erect and tenting in his shorts. We spent a nice 15 minutes touching and masturbating on his bed before parting. Be very very subtle though - just go for eye contact. What hotel??? I’m looking for one with an onsen thinking that it’ll be mostly hotel guests and not local families. This also seems to be better for some eye candy and exhibitionism on my part!!
 
I’ve heard that APA Hotel Shinjuku Gyoenmae gets a gay clientele to their basement onsen, so I would expect that there has to be some level of cruising going on. Can anyone confirm this. I also would expect a hotel to be less “family” especially so close to the gay district of Shinjuku.
I would love to visit an onsen (Jul 25-29) where there is some subtle cruising!! I’m not interested in a gay bathhouse as these seem so hardcore, which is not what I want.

Yes I can confirm, that was the one I stayed at years ago. Not sure if it's still around though
 
I’d explore hostels with a communal onsen or sento. Usually you would get younger/backpackers at cheaper accommodation and I’m sure eye candy would be good.
Does any one have any hostel recommendations in Japan?
 
Saw a post on twitter about APA hotel too, some guests also like to exhib on the corridor

Regarding your question about public onsen (not the gay bathhouse), true there are some people do cruising, but not that direct, do they play? yes, when the time permits. Usually not during crowd times. Where? Anywhere. Which one is most possible? The ones in more densed populated area. Again, those who intend to play will go to bathhouse, japanese people have the inner culture to think about others, thus mostly they will not play in public onsen. But no play 100% is absolutely not.
