I think mine tends to grow downward first and can be fully hard that way (as well as sticking outward at a somewhat more horizotal pitch). Fact is, the tendons (or muscles, don't know which) that pull downward on my dong are much stronger than those that pull upward, which is why if I pull upward on my erection it'll snap back downward.
