It all depends: The word or identity "homosexual" didn't exist until the 1860s. The acts did, of course. In most of the ancient world, the inability to be aroused by both sexes was actually considered a sign of impotence.
Among my own ancestors, things were more based on gender role. Men who were effeminate were exclusively homosexual, BUT -- and this is a big but -- their partners weren't. (Being chosen by such a man was actually considered an honor.)

I'm thinking that to associate oneself with such identities is to loose something of oneself. Before anyone is considered human, they are considered everything BUT human. Gay, strait, man, woman, hetrosexual, homosexual, freak, asshole, idiot, genious ... whatever. All this comes before recignition of the divine within each individual. It's a bit disgusting, and often self destructive in one way or another, yet each of us has been programmed to think in this manner.
Imma shut up though, before I write a novel.
