HONOLULU - Television bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman apologized Wednesday for repeatedly using a racial slur in a profanity-laced tirade during a private phone conversation with his son that was recorded and posted online.

Chapman, star of A&E's hit reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," responded after The National Enquirer posted a clip of the conversation in which Chapman uses the N-word in reference to his son's girlfriend.

A&E officials did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment from The Associated Press. Chapman issued a statement apologizing for the comments.

The recording was first posted online by the Enquirer. It was unclear who recorded the conversation or how the tabloid obtained the 1 1/2-minute clip in which Chapman uses the N-word six times. A woman at the Enquirer said no one would be available to comment after hours.

In the conversation, Chapman urges his son to break up with his girlfriend. He also expresses concern about the girlfriend going public about the TV star's use of the N-word.

In the clip, Chapman also stated he doesn't care that his son's girlfriend is black.

In a statement, the 54-year-old Chapman said he has "utmost respect and aloha for black people who have suffered so much due to racial discrimination and acts of hatred.

"I did not mean to add yet another slap in the face to an entire race of people who have brought so many gifts to this world," he said. "I am ashamed of myself and I pledge to do whatever I can to repair this damage I have caused."

Chapman said, "My sincerest, heartfelt apologies go out to every person I have offended for my regrettable use of very inappropriate language. I am deeply disappointed in myself for speaking out of anger to my son and using such a hateful term in a private phone conversation."

Chapman said the clip was completely taken out of context.

"I was disappointed in his choice of a friend, not due to her race, but her character," he said. "However, I should have never used that term."

Chapman said he is meeting with his spiritual adviser, Rev. Tim Storey, who is black, and hopes to meet with other black leaders, "so they can see who I really am and teach me the right thing to do to make things right, again."

"I know that all of my fans are deeply disappointed in me, as well, as I have tried to be a model for doing the right thing," he said. "I did not do the right thing this time, and hope you will forgive me."

The Honolulu-based bounty hunter first grabbed headlines for apprehending serial rapist and Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in 2003.

oh calm yourself, like youve never called a white guy/girl 'honky' 'cracker' or 'wonderbread'.

Sheesh neither of us know the full extent of the conversation!

This world is far too fucking PC! So he doesnt like the girl, my heart bleeds, maybe she was a cow maybe she wasnt! Does it really matter?

I'm in two minds about this, use of the N word is wrong in any context, however a private telephone conversation should be private.

Dog is what he is. A redneck. This is how many of them are and I agree, he is just apologizing because this threatens his fame.

Clearly, he meant nothing of what he said. It sounds like someone wrote that reply for him. Whatever, I never watched his show before, so I damn sure am not going to watch it ever.
Actually, I never have. A lot of Black people I know DON'T call White people "honky", "cracker" or "wonderbread".

In fact, I've never heard of the term "wonderbread" until you just said it.

Well Osiris just labelled Dog a "redneck". That in itself is also a derogitary remark. I dont have a problem with him saying it and shit if we are generalising then hell yeah he probably is a redneck! But why so much crap over remarks (i.e negative generalisations)that im sure pretty much everyone in the world has had come out their mouth at one point in their life!

Guy's, don't be so harsh. He clearly said he didn't mean, "you fuccken scum nigger", just, "nigger." And it's not because she's black.

A hulking black inmate probably took to Dog's buttocks with a hot and relentless ferocity and fervor seldom seen. Shredded his sphincter. The hate is justified.

Wait. On the phone he pretty much says he'd not going to stop saying nigger, and so he wants his son to get rid of the girl so no one catches him saying it, records him, and sends it in to the Enquirer. He says he wants his son to get rid of the girl because he wants to keep using a gross word. He then uses that gross word to describe her. His speech on the phone is completely ineloquent. Then he releases an eloquent apology in which he says, "...I am deeply disappointed in myself for speaking out of anger to my son and using such a hateful term in a private phone conversation."

    Well. Which way is it?

I have heard white people do this before. In the minds of some whites, maybe other races I don't know, there are two classes of black people, blacks and niggers. Blacks are decent, honest, upstanding people and niggers are gang bangers, crackheads, welfare moms, and every other negative stereotype of black people there is. Oprah, Denzel, Colin Powell, and Condi Rice are black. Perhaps they're what might be known as, "one of the good ones." They're people you'd associate with, invite to your home, respect for their character (well, maybe not Rice, but that's political:wink:) yet aren't Uncle Toms. I'm not sure what kind of racism this is because I don't think the people who do it see it as racism. It's tough for me to qualify because I have even heard black people make the same distinctions themselves usually when a black person is arrested or suspected in a crime. Things like, "damned nigger," leave their mouths and I feel I just can't say anything to that because no matter what I say, it will sound racist. They seem exasperated that yet another black person has done something to make all blacks look bad in the eyes of other races.

I think the attitude is similar to whites calling some other whites white trash or redneck though I don't think either term is comparable to nigger.

This is why I don't think Chapman thinks he's racist. I've seen the show and it never would have dawned on me that he was given the way he treats people of other races. I'm not excusing what he did but I am saying that I can see why he thinks he isn't racist because so many other people who don't believe they are racist have done the same thing.

You can refer to someone's class or socioeconomic status or errant behavior with a hell of a better, let alone direct, word than "nigger." I don't even buy the whole schtick about, "Oh, it really means 'niggardly'," and that means..." blah, blah, blah. Right. Why would you want to toe that close to the line? Seriously, people don't second-guess using, feeling comfortable with, and dodging the use of such a word if that didn't really know what it was all about.

Now, nigga on the other hand...

That wasn't racist at all...

Seriously, though...I've not met anyone (of any race) who didn't laugh throughout that whole show.
