I wouldn't have a pet if it was up to me, but we have a cat. Cats can pretty much take care of themselve where a dog is totally dependant on its human.

When we lived in Montana there was one winter we went to visit the folks in California for Christmas. We left the cat and food outside under the porch and snow and ice for water. When we came back 10 days later the cat was happy to see us. It later lost the very tips of its ears to frostbite. When we got back to the cabin it was -24 degrees inside the cabin, word to the wise when mayonaise separates because of freezing temperatures you can't beat it back in to submission. That was one tough cat and it lived the longest of any that we have had since.

I think dogs can be loyal companions, they need to be walked, and they need company. Cats are arrogant and can be emotionally abusive.

Both cats and dogs can be more worthwhile than many humans.

I haven't had either one in years, but the last cat I kept around was very affectionate and had a great personality. He was a lot like a dog, except for using the litter box and being able to climb. He followed me when I went for walks, loved to play, and always kept my feet warm at night. His favorite food was cantaloupe (I had to put him outside to cut up a cantaloupe, and had to seal up the rinds and seed so he couldn't get into them...) and he hated umbrellas. He was a black long-hair adoptee with yellow eyes, and we named him Diablo.

Our white-trash neighbors had a fighting dog that they let out at night. It killed all the cats in the neighborhood, including Diablo.

I've had both and each has its pros/cons. At this point, I'm ready to be animal free. The constant fur all over the house, odor, etc. is wearing on me. However, I'm sure that after a few years of being pet free I'll do it again and go with another dog (preferably lab sized).

dog.
dog that doesn't bring half dead baby birds into the house to share with me.

lol.... I appreciate the kitty's attempts to pay homage to its family.

The best thing happened the other day with my cat as it brought a still live bird home in its mouth. So, once he dropped it and we let him back in the house, we let the bird recover from its fear induced paralysis and it flew back off just fine. It's kind of like fishing and throwing it back, the cat proved it could get the job done, but didn't actually harm anything in the end.

There was another thread on this very question not that long ago. I'll answer how I did in that one. I like dogs better, but I'm not a pet person in the first place, so it is unlikely I would ever own a pet on my own. Cats creep me out for some reason, but I think kitties are adorable. Dogs are both adorable as puppies and when fully grown. We had many dogs when I was growing up. Everything from a big ol' slobbering St. Bernard who we called "Bernie" to a little mutt we called "Loco". I loved those dogs! Still, I have enough trouble looking after myself, let alone a pet, so I won't be having one any time soon.

One of my cats that I have now is like that with cheese. He loves it. If I am eating it he will start slapping me with his paw to get my attention until I give him some.

...He was a lot like a dog...His favorite food was cantaloupe...
I had one like that back in college. Gray tabby stray. Played fetch, and would fish cantaloupe rinds out of the trash. Not too bright though - he'd get lost in the house and sit and meow until we found him.

The neighbor's dog has adopted me, probably because I'm the only one that pays attention to her. Big ugly pit with a spiked collar. Really disconcerting to walk out the door in the moring and find her waiting on the porch. Sweet dog though - she just wants to play fetch with an old tennis ball, and tries to climb in my lap. She thinks she's a lap dog.

Take care,
