This term pertains mainly to New Jersey. We say we are going "down the shore", when we are driving to the beach. Even if you are south and driving north you would say the same thing. I guess this is because the largest population areas are in the Northeast of the state and we have to go "down the shore."

In Florida I would say I am going to the beach.

Do you have a saying that is regional to your area?

We tend to use both in the UK too.

Shore, beach or seashore perhaps more usually beach, or at last that's the one I hear most often. It's called the shoreline though in that context it's something you admire rather than visit.

It would usually be down to the...or, just to the...

"Down" could be in reference to elevation. *shrug*
Sea level is generally lower than any point on land.

No it is said like "I am going down to the corner" or "down to the coffee shop". We have over 100 miles of shoreline, much of NJ is at or around sea level.

Okay. Neither of these examples have anything to do with North or South which seemed to be the centre of your first example.

"Going down" isn't regional, hun.

Well... down is one of those words that has oodles of meaning.

The phrase, "down the shore." uses down as an adverb, and the specific definition that applies is:

"to the source or actual position: The dogs tracked down the bear."

Or, the dogs sneaked up on the bear, or the dogs closed in on the bear, or the dogs ran down the bear or the dogs bore down on the bear...

Isn't English perverse, I mean fun?:biggrin1:

Or shore up the bear.
