Im looking into buying a DSLR camera for the first time. I have always had a passion for photography but never the had money to buy a DSLR. im really not sure where I need to start looking or what I to look for in a DSLR. considering im a beginner to the DSLR ( ive used oen here and there before for school projects and such ) im not looking to buy the best of the best. I feel that anything between 200-300 is a suitable price for a beginner camera. If I can get my hands on something used im ok. What cameras do you guys own and what do you think I should look for?

I don't have a DSLR, just a Panasonic ZS-5, pocket camera. A photographer who's had several high end DSLRs told me that for the amount of pics I take (not really hobby volume) the Panny is a fantastic camera, given that it has a Leica lens and takes excellent photos.

That said, you can find some good DSLRs on craigslist or ebay in your price range, some may even come with extra lenses for different purposes, because the more avid photographers frequently upgrade their stuff to keep up with the Joneses.

Photographers I know tend to stick with Canon EOS __D series. A 50D might suit your needs as a beginner.

I used to have a Nikon D300 and it was a great camera. There are now lots of used ones and they can use every F-mount lens Nikon ever made. It's a very rugged machine.

I sold the Nikon because it was just too large and bulky. I currently use the Fujifilm X-T1, which is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses.

Ive been seeing a lot of "mirrorless" type of cameras, what does that mean?

Ive had a sony cybershot and takes great pics, I just want to buy a DSLR now so that I can start practicing and using one. Especially for long exposure shots or night shots. Ill look into the cameras you mentioned.
