As far as dubstep goes? Hmm. I think you might like Milanese's song "Dead Man Walking" that features the Virus Syndicate. You also might dig on some of Burial's stuff. It's all a matter of what you go for.

OK Apollo I'm going to put it on loud tomorrow and report back. So if I like hip hop and I like rave but not that more electronic house kinda stuff who do you recommend trying out? Something with more of a beat and less "trance" like...

I am so confused. There's nothing remotely trance-y about dubstep. Trance's major focus is on euphoria-inducing synths whereas dubstep is dirty as fuck and all in the bass. I don't want it to seem like I'm picking on you, but I actually was kind of offended that you likened dubstep to (shudder) New Age music and I feel the need to point out these differences.

That being said, you're obviously opening up to this stuff and are willing to give it a try so I'd recommend you listen to some of these more accessible songs that got me into the genre:

The Bug - "Skeng"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwmUOJR-GwA

Vex'd - "Lion V.I.P."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tZE949j9ms

And pick up the compilation "5 Years of Hyperdub" from the Hyperdub label to get a general idea of what kind of dubstep stuff is going on.

Also, not dubstep, but if you like hip hop/rap, maybe you'd like Dizzee Rascal. I guess he'd be classified as UK grime/garage which is like dubstep's older sibling.

Dizzee Rascal - "Fix Up, Look Sharp"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZGvnI37mxk

Oh and Apollo's right - this music has some fat bass and needs to be turned way the eff up with a subwoofer that can handle it.

Kudos on mentioning grime. A lot of dubstep production owes a good deal to the likes of Wiley and co. There are a lot of grime and dubstep producers whose setups consist of Logic and Fruity Loops. Simplicity at its best.

OK OK OK...lets start from the beginning because yes I am asking in order to open my mind to new stuff.

The first link you posted: Scuba - Three Sided Shape - Triangulation ..this to me DOES sound like ambient/new age music set to a drum beat

Mount Kimbie - Maybes - HF021 - sounds like world music set to a drum beat.

Neither are terribly inspiring, is this mellow music that you'd just relax to?? Dance to? Listen in the car? Thats the thing I dont "get". Its almost like the intro to a song that never gets going.

So continuing on..
The Bug - Skeng ..this is definitely better for me, at least it has a beat and the "rapping" whatever, words, adds to it.

Vex'd - Lion V.I.P - better still, I like that the drum is heavier. I have no idea what genre this is though you've thrown out a lot of terms and I dont know which is which. I think it's hard to get out of the idea of a beginning, middle and end with this kind of music. It just kinda goes on at roughly the same level.

I listened to Burial - Fostercare. Sort of reminds me of the Blade Runner soundtrack. Not really my cup of tea, but I guess this is good music to listen to while you're cleaning the house? LOL..how do you listen to it?

I also listened to Fix up, Look sharp-by dizzee rascal. I DO like this..it has a good beat, very funky. I like it!

I found this UKF Dubstep Mix - August. Very cool!
I like it alot and this doesnt sound at all like your previous links. I like all of the crazy electronic sound effects and it has a good beat. So the relation to your first links and this..don't really get that.

Seems like we may be talking about apples and oranges..

Interesting choice on the Burial. I'd recommend "U Hurt Me" along with "Archangel" and "Untrue" as more indicative of his stuff.

Did you check out the Milanese yet?

Oh, and you might wanna peep this for some general info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHaCSMJfGUA

hhmm Burial, is too slow and ambient for my taste. I prefer a lot faster, (harder?) beat. I have found some really cool stuff on Youtube by searching for Dubstep, and I really do like the more upbeat stuff. I will explore that further. I started to watch the doc as well, hard to understand with the British accents but when I have some more time I'll watch the whole thing.

Let me reiterate: dubstep is NOTHING like new age music. I find this so offensive because there are three types of "music" that I absolutely cannot stand: new age, smooth jazz, and Muzak. To me, all three of these things are just facsimiles of music with no real complexity or sense of musicality. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions of course, but saying Mount Kimbie sounds like world music (which is such an astoundingly broad generalization as it is) with a drum beat leads me to believe that you don't have the most expansive knowledge of music. I'm just telling it like it is. Some music needs more context than others to be fully appreciated.

Personally, I prefer dubstep that makes your head nod and isn't necessarily made to dance to. You seem to like the opposite, which is fine. Check out guys like Rusko, Skream, and Caspa who tend to show more of the drum n' bass influence on dubstep.

Skream - Midnight Request Line

Rusko - I Love You

Caspa - I Beat My Robot

LOL Don't be mad at me Cheese. I am unfamiliar with this kind of music, so I am probably generalizing. Just trying to explain why I dont get it. Skeam is a little too slow for me. I DO like Rusko and Caspa. The kind of music I listened to during my dancing/clubbing days as a youngster was stuff like:

The classic..
L.A. Style - James Brown Is Dead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ9HqCtjrpc

Praga Khan - Injected With A Poison
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikGtCA3OJJc

Two Little Boys- Stylophonia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNO4EZU8GSQ

So I guess I am more into rave?? I am always looking for new stuff though. Im glad we are having this discussion :)

Haha, I'm sorry for being an asshole about it. I guess I took the New Age comparison a little too personally. BUT now that you posted what you listen to I have a better idea of what to suggest! I think you'd really enjoy Zomby's album "Where Were U in '92?" He's also on the Hyperdub label with Burial, but Zomby's got this amazing throwback sound to old school rave.

Zomby - Euphoria

Also, you might like this:

Breakage & Roots Manuva - Run 'Em Out

Not necessarily dubstep, but this is one of those old school rave tracks I really dig.

The tempo thing is really interesting. In grime, 140 bpm is pretty fast because you have an emcee (usually a very agile one) who fleshes things out. In dubstep, 140 bpm seems slower because a lot of the drums are more sparse and, for the most part, there isn't an emcee. However, when drums are in a minimal role at that tempo, your body intuitively kind of adds the missing parts. Thus, the head-nodding. It's a little bit more of a subtle animal.

Ah, the early days of Techno/Rave. :biggrin1:
For the last few years, techno has made a massive comeback with a lot of house DJs. The genre has since then branched out and has influenced many other 4-on-4 styles. Many things that classify as techno now wouldn't sound anywhere as close to these earlier tracks.

Kudos, Vinyl. Have you been keeping up with house much in the past few years? If so, what are your thoughts on the stuff that's emerging from the Buzzin' Fly camp?

Thanks, Apollo1!
I've been hearing some great deep & tech house tracks coming from Buzzin' Fly lately. Just recently purchased a track from Tracey Thorn called "Why Does The Wind?". A remixer that I never heard of before named Andre Lodemann did a really good job on it. They also got some stuff from Charles Webster, Ben Watt, Pete Heller & Jimpster who are some of my favorite house producers. My iPod is full of tracks like this, especially when I want to wind down from a busy day (or night) but not put myself to sleep. Gives me the dance beats I need and the lushness to groove to it.

Sorry if I may have confused you.
What you linked to definitely qualifies at Techno/Rave. That was some of the tracks in the early days when the genre started to break out to the masses. All I meant to say is that since the days of "James Brown Is Dead", the genre has expanded thanks to many other electronic musicians who were influenced by it and implemented elements from Techno into their own style of production.

When you get a chance, check out this site. It's a flowchart/timeline for Electronic music that is a little cheeky in design, but it really does show how many of the genres we like now were developed and grew over the last few decades. Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music | New Home on Techno.org

Vinyl, it's really grand to see how Ben Watt's career and style has evolved. From the jazzier stuff that EBTG started out with, to the all-encompassing electronic tour de force that last two EBTG records were, to the Lazy Dog stuff and now Buzzin' Fly. It's really rare for someone to pull it off successfully.

Seaside, here's the Milanese track I mentioned before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdYktLQAGcQ
