- FRE,
no i dont get it. i have read the Iliad and the odyssey for my humanities class last year but i liked the class but couldnt stand all the essays i had to write. ironically i have written alot since i started using this site again. everything has its place though, along with being a student/athlete i am a gamer and i will always hold gaming and gaming culture in high regard. feel free to tell me what that quote means. i also didnt know what erudite meant had to look it up i may be a university student but im a kinesiology major not an English major although my writing skills are good i hate writing essays
I strongly believe in a liberal education that should include far more than the subjects required to earn a living. My degree is in business administration. People seem surprised that know about things unrelated to my degree. My father got is degree from the Naval Academy and people were astonished to find out that he was well versed in British poetry. My brother got his EE from MIT and people are surprised to find out that he is familiar with many of the Greek philosophers. My sister is a retired clinical psychologist with a PhD in psychology, but she is very well read and familiar with many different cultures. It's unfortunate that for many people, education ends after they get a degree and they end up knowing very little except what was necessary to get that degree. Television and computer games are partly responsible for that unfortunate situation.
As to the "all Albuquerque is divided into four parts," here is a clue. Ask someone who has studied Latin; he or she will probably know the literary connection. My sister got it because she studied Latin for two years; the other person who got it was a Latin major. However, I have not studied Latin and I got the connection immediately.
I suggest reading the biographies of the barons of industry who were active during the Robber Baron era. That would include Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, the Astors, and others. If you do, you will find clear parallels between our economy now and the economy of that era, what was done to correct the abuses of that era, and what could be solutions to our present problems.
