Nearly one-fifth of Americans think Obama is a Muslim. Thanks, Fox news, for acting like this was a matter of opinion, not fact.
CNN's KURTZ: Right, I havent heard anybody who works for Fox News saying the President is a Muslim. Of course, Obama stating that "the Islamic call to prayer is one of the prettiest sounds on earth," didn't help convince people who think he's a muslim change their minds.
25 percent of Americans dont believe in Darwins theory of evolution while less than 40 percent do. Consider the fact that several of our newly elected officials, specifically newly elected Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, share that belief.
So what? What happened to liberals being tolerant to other views and beliefs? Does it harm you personally some people prefer to believe they were created in the image of some God, instead of having a chimp hanging down from the family tree?
Earlier this year, nearly 40 percent of Americans still believed the Sarah Palin-supported lie about "death panels" being included in health care reform.
Ask NY Times' Paul Krugman (quite a liberal) about this and he'll tell you: "At some point we have to decide how much we're willing to spend for extreme (health) care." The problem with health care is and likely will always be cost. Nothing in the bill addresses this issue. What do you think will happen with health care decisions when the money available is x and cost is x times y?
As of just a few years ago, about half of Americans still suspected a connection between Saddam Hussein and the attacks of September 11, a lie that was reinforced by none other than Dick Cheney.
Read this:
Cheney: No link between Saddam Hussein, 9/11 - CNN and get back to me, ok?
While a hefty amount of this demonstrable cluelessness gets better as the respondents get younger, all is not well in the below-30 demographic. A majority of young Americans cannot identify Iraq or Afghanistan--the places their peers are fighting and dying--on a map.
A real testimonial to the effectiveness of public education. I suppose throwing more money yet at it will fix it? I wonder if students of private and charter schools would do better...
Two out of five Americans, despite the whole separation of church and state being a foundation of our democracy thing, think teachers should be able to lead prayer in classrooms. So it seems those right-wingers clamoring to tear down the wall between church and state arent the only ones who dont know their constitutional principles.
Now you're just making sh*t up. Please provide the exact location of 'separation of church and state' in the founding documents (upon which our democracy "thing" is based): The Constitution and/or Declaration of Independence, or any Amendments to the Constitution. I do believe the founders of our Republic (we're not a Democracy after all) wrote something like "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator," by which I'm pretty sure they didn't mean some dude from planet Xenu...
It was Jefferson, a man with deep religious conviction, who wrote the phrase "wall of separation between church and state" in a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802 (and thus not any "official" founding or legislative document). Jefferson recognized the dangers of a head of state also being a religious leader, as with the church of England. This is what the founders addressed by formulating the "religion clauses" of First Amendment. Interestingly, liberals focus on the government can't endorse religion bit, but frequently ignore the government can't stop the free exercise of religion bit...
Many Americans still believe in witchcraft, ESP and other supernatural phenomena. Does that explain why Christine ODonnell was so quick to deny her dabbling?
Maybe because tolerant, open-minded liberals (many of whom no doubt have some crystals hanging off the rear view mirrors of their Prius cars) were ridiculing her for it? That's just a guess on my part though. Also, Christians typically don't mix well with Pagans, and since she was trying to get the conservative vote, my guess is she wanted to not p*ss them off? Kinda like Obama denying he's a muslim. So what if he is? But enough people (including many Democrats) wouldn't vote for a muslim, as they would for an alleged Christian...
Speaking of antiquated religious beliefs, about a decade ago, 20 percent of Americans still believed that the sun revolves around the earth. That's just sad, considering that even the Vatican has let Galileo off the hook for being right.
More evidence that the public education system is doing wonders for our populous!
Only about half of Americans realize that Judaism is the oldest of the three monotheistic religions. Other examples of wild misunderstanding about religion and the separation of church and state can be found in this falls Pew survey on Americans religious knowledge.
Well, on one hand you want religion out of the class-room (see bogus separation of church and state comment above) and then you wonder why people aren't educated about religion?
This one made a huge splash when it appeared. In 2006 more Americans were able to name two of the seven dwarves than two of the Supreme Court justices. And that was before Kagan and Sotomayor showed up. To be fair, Happy and Sleepy are easy to remember.
And yet, those same people were allowed to vote, which explains how an empty suit, without any experience, but with nice speeches (on a teleprompter) and a couple of good catch phrases (Yes we can! Hope & Change!) became president. (As a side note, there are AAA baseball umpires more qualified to be on SCOTUS than both Kagan and Sotomayor.)
More Americans can identify the Three Stooges than the three branches of government--you know, the ones who are jockeying over our welfare.
More reason people should be able to pass a civics test before they can register to vote. As far as my welfare, I'm the only one I count on, because everybody else will just let you down!
I can't say I don't believe a couple of these things myself, but in another place in the article, they are being told that Obama has raised taxes! despite their being lowered for most of us...we are a laughing stock.
Changing withholding rates isn't the same as a tax cut. Tax rates stayed the same as established under the Bush administration, and will be going up by an average of 10% per household (even for those of us making less than the $250K) on January 1, 2011, when the Bush tax cuts expire, unless congress takes action before then. Side note, by reducing withholding rates, and keeping tax rates the same, many people will find an unpleasant surprise on April 15 next year...
Happy Thanksgiving!
