When I was a freshman in college I took the most advanced 'data processing' class. We learned to operate the card sorter and the accounting machine, which had to be rewired (by the operator) for each different kind of job. Keypunch was around for a lot longer.

Yeah, I remember those cards getting spilt all the time. They were everywhere.
