It seems almost absurd that this news would break on Christmas Day of all times.

BBC NEWS | Americas | US singer Eartha Kitt dies at 81

Eartha Kitt with Friends Santa Baby

American singer and actress Eartha Kitt has died at the age 81, a family friend has said.
Kitt was said to have been suffering from colon cancer.
She was one of the few artists to be nominated in the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award categories and was a stalwart of the Manhattan cabaret scene.
She famously played Catwoman in the 1960s Batman television series and was known for her distinctive, feline drawl.
Kitt was blacklisted in the US in the late 1960s after speaking out against the Vietnam War at a White House function.
However, she returned triumphantly to New York's Broadway in a 1974 production, Timbuktu!, and continued to perform regularly in theatre shows and concert halls.
She rose to the top of the entertainment world from humble origins.
Her mother worked on a cotton plantation and was just 14 when she gave birth. Kitt was then given away at the age of eight and sent to live with an aunt in New York.

Oh... That's sad. She was one of my all time favourites. I always admired her for speaking out against the war. She took a lot of flack for that. Great Lady.

Without a doubt the single most stylish, sophisticated, and thoroughly vivacious performer I've had the fortune to see and meet in person, Eartha possessed one of those captivating personalities which could light up any room and which could instantly induce a smile in even the most depressed company.

She was a ludicrously major influence on me during my adolescence, and I even appeared in a couple of school plays singing versions of her songs. Tsk, gay icons, eh?

A unique and irreplaceable character whose sensuality and sultriness continued to shine even until a very few months ago.

NO! She was so great at everything she did, at least everything I saw.

Having said that, I didn't know her work well, but what I did know (her Catwoman) and her songs...... I loved them and I really liked her.

I remember when I was about 11 or 12 I went with my mom to visit her friend that had a show on t.v. Earth Kitt was the guest star that week and I got to meet her.

I remember visiting with my moms friend Ken who did makeup on the show. Wardrobe was bringing in costumes for Eartha to approve. She would have them lay them on her chest and she would turn to her assistant and ask.

She would ask 'Now do this in Eartha's voice' I dont know would Eartha wear this? She talked about her self in third person. I remember sitting there and watching this woman talking about herself as if she was another person.

She caught me looking at her and smiled and said, well hello there young man whats your name. I chatted with her and it wasnt till I was about 18 that I truly enjoyed that moment as I than knew who she was and her history.

Im sad to learn that she has passed on as she was a very kind and sweet woman. R.I.P. Eartha Kitt.

I learned of this sad news while I was reading the paper. A true one of a kind. Thankfully we have video tape of many of her performances so we can always enjoy her.

Such a great performer. I saw her in Toronto years ago. She will be missed. A true original.

I always thought she was so talented and she was such a force of nature!
She was tremendous in any of the starring vehicles written for her Timbuktu comes to mind also Yzma as qua mentioned "Catwoman" and as a cabaret singer extraordinaire!
Timbuktu was the last one I saw her in and even though it was panned
I thought she was amazing!
R.I.P.
