And don't forget good old Vegemite!
It's a part of Aussie kids childhoods as much as the sun and the ocean.

One of my personal favorite regional delights is this. I don't think you can get the Okinawan sweet potatoes anywhere except Japan and Hawaii!

Just remember Lamingtons are always square. Think of a swiss roll slab of sponge cake cut into squares.

Yep.

We also have little cakes called Cherry Blossoms.
Same deal with the squares of sponge cake but rolled in half set strawberry jelly and then in coconut.

I bet those things are amazing as well.

I don't know about eating Vegemite though.

"Vegemite is made from used brewers' yeast extract, a waste product of beer manufacturing, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste may be described as salty , slightly bitter :eek:, and malty :eek::eek: — somewhat similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth and sticky, much like peanut butter. It is not as intensely flavoured as British Marmite and it is less sweet than the New Zealand version of Marmite."

From Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minneapolis (probably parts of Illinois, too) down through the plaines states them things are home-made and called "bars." Rice Krispies mixed with marshamallow cream and baked for two seconds then cut into -- bars. Lemon -- bars. Why cut out individual cookies when you can just spread the dough over a cookie sheet and once baked, cut into -- bars.

And if you whip up a "hot dish" (some people call it casserole) and serve it with bars you have a complete meal.

Pour a can of Campbells (or generic) mushroom, cream of celery, or cheese soup over a bed of cooked noodles, mix in a pound of the cheapest ground meat you can find (brown it first) and top with corn flakes. Bake for 30 minutes at 325 and Voila! Generic hot dish! I've even seen Beanie Weenie mixed with sliced cabbage and covered in ketchup, tomato sauce or whatever baked and served as hot dish. These are best served at public functions unless you want the resulting flatulence to gas you out of house and home.

As for those of you still a bit confused about poutine, it must be whole sliced deep fried potatoes covered in cheese curd (cheddar cheese curd, but it must be in curd form -- loose and drippy) and topped with brown (usually beef-based) gravy -- and lots of it. Soooooo delicious . . . until it cools and hardens.

We have Vanilla custard slice or as it is affectionately known here as "Snot Blocks"
Line the base of a deep swiss roll tin with plain square crackers - Sao's are best - make a very thick vanilla custard and pour over the top and then top with more crackers.
Place in the fridge until the custard sets hard.
Ice with Passion Fruit icing and cut into squares the same size as the crackers.

Fries - poutine is fine but not my favorite (the poutine we get in western Canada is not the same as the poutine from Quebec). Malt vinegar and salt; or Heinz ketchup; or beef gravy all excellent, if the fries are done to crispiness. Had a GF years ago who'd slather her fries with gravy, mustard and black pepper, then mash up the whole thing and eat it like, well, mashed potatoes. Looked disgusting but tasted not bad. Some interesting ideas here I've going to have to try.

Beans - In Texas last year had some Bush's beans - taste like they've been slow-cooked right out of the can, but cannot get all varieties in Canada. No other canned beans I've ever had come close to their Hickory Smoked variety.

Don't be like that. Marmite is our equivalent and it's fabulous. I have it on toast for my breakfast often. Our dog Sacha loves it and when I'm eating it it is the only time she ever begs. Good taste has my dog

Well, Davey...

It is just a matter of taste. Honestly, I couldn't eat Vegemite as it is and on toast. But I have said before, people who love Vegemite are totally welcome to nosh face down to the heart's content.

I'd be happy eating a sausage and egg muffin at HUNGRY JACK'S .

But clearly we are weird, because they even made a joke about it in the movie 'Pulp Fiction' about how crazy it is to put mayonaise on your fries instead of ketchup.

So, what do you guys do on your fries and what eating habits suprised you in other countries?
I like a dash of salt and a hint of pepper (white or black) on my french fries, prior to dipping them in Heinz or Hunt's ketchup. Unless I am eating fried shrimp or clam strips then I dip the fries in tartar sauce.

I personally eat french fries without tomato ketchup. I like to taste the hot fried potato, the oil, and the salt on them. I like McDonald's french fries the best.
Me too!

I am not used to eating fresh game meat. No rabbit, no venison, no squirrel for me.
And you call yourself a southern gentleman!?

My niece's hubby is from Senegal. He eats these amazingly spicy peppers. He thought that Texas Pete hot sauce was like Heinz.
:eek:mfg: I save that for collard greens and chitlins.

I like fries with malt vinegar and salt. I don't find anything weird about the culinary habits of other countries; my travels have expanded my palate and appreciation for unique foods. Call me epicurious!
You are a better man the me. :biggrin1: Heck, I find some of the culinary habits of other states weird, forget other countries. What's up with Lutefisk? I'm not eating anything that has to soak in lye. :yuck:

my x girlfriend used to do that....I'd just stare in HORROR!!! Kinda like when people put Ketchup on eggs... *shiver* :)
I see that occassionally and shudder. I think those people are barbarians and heretics.:tongue:

My oddest (or so I'm told) eating habit is going to a movie, ordering the giant popcorn with the faux palm oil-based "butter" and dumping an extra large box of dark chocolate covered mints (I forget their name) on top of the popcorn. With every other handful of popcorn one gets a sweet minty surprise!
Junior Mints and buttered popcorn? Hmm? Not to my taste but I do understand the salt/sweet thing.

That sounds good. I may make that.

.

We Belgians put mayonaise on our fries and also salt. But the people in the North of France and in Britain put vinegar on their fries.

I encounterd vinegar on fries during my first trip to Ireland. I came to like it.

I can't see how mayo, vinegar, tabasco, cheese, ketchup, salad dressing or whatever else on fries is any more repulsive. Its all good, particularly after a couple of Stellas.

It depends on my mood. In the past I have eaten the following on my fries:

Red Rooster hot sauce
Ketchup and Spicy Ketchup
Chili
Mayonnaise (my fave) with onion
Guacamole
Chocolate Milk Shake (From Wendy's and I no longer consume milk products, but was it GOOD!)
Seasoned salt
Malt Vinegar (Yum)
