I'm 58, have a mild ED problem, & low libido. yet I have morning wood about 1/2 the time in the morning, and sometimes I wake early am, 4 or 5 and I am rock hard, not on "pee-on" obviously I was dreaming about something sexy, but how come I get an erection at one time and not another??

I think it's difficult to know. Sounds autonomic - sleep stages and whatever the body's up to during these, compared to what it's 'willing' to do while you're conscious and how your psych state effects whatever it is you're after. It can be purely physiological - heart, hormones, and all the rest - which is why you should see your doctor, You're 58. You say, 'low libido'.
Check-up/tune-up time..

That's common with me too. The problem is, shortly after waking and realizing you're hard, it begins to disappear. During the waking hours I can get it up by fantasizing too, but the erection only lasts a few minutes, not long enough for a fuck or handjob.

The ED began when I was 62 and I'm 74 now. I had plenty libido but it didn't send enough blood into my penis. When the problem started I went to a good urologist for a complete exam, and the outcome was he prescribed Viagra. It has worked almost perfectly for me, with almost no side effects (sometimes a brief mild headache). Viagra takes effect in about 20 minutes for me and lasts for about 6 hours. As far as I'm concerned it's a life saver...sex life that is. I wouldn't be without it.

Biologically speaking, your body's levels of testosterone are highest in the morning, which is actually the main reason for morning wood. Testosterone levels decrease naturally with age, so that could explain everything here. There are ways you can help though. Are you overweight? Belly fat converts testosterone into estrogen. Losing weight has done wonders for many a man's sex drive.

not overweight. 6'5" 204 lbs, ride a bicycle every day. cholesterrol is good, been on BP meds a year now. see the doc every 6 months, says my heart sounds real good, strong. I don't know how they can tell by listening, but that's why they are docs.. the ED problem started before the BP meds, but the meds seem to make it worse. the doc says it shouldn't, so gives me free samples of viagra. probably testosterone decline. insurance isn't gonna cover that.

A good point was brought up in relation to hormone panels and many MD's miss this one. You would need both serum and free floating testosterone with an additional DHT level. In addition to those you need to test for elevated estrogen and prolactin. If prolactin is elevated it really screws with erections.

Anti-hypertensives always play havoc with erections and this is another factor.

Your morning wood is not the effect of peak hormone levels as much as it is a full bladder pressing on several nerves by early AM.

The other thing that is a give away on ED is position. If you can get an erection lying on either side and have trouble to variable degrees in other positions it is the ED monster.

Personally I have injections for special occasions, but daily Cialis keeps you ready to go all the time and you can be spontaneous as you would have been at a younger age.

I am 57 years old and my ED originated with an injury. It is a rough thing but today there are a number of things that can be done to treat it.

Best of Luck,
