I want able to find much info here prior to my surgery, so I thought I'd post my experience in case other had questions.

I was not a candidate for non-surgical procedures such as REZUM or the Urolift, leaving TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) as my best option. In plain English, a camera and a surgical tool is inserted into the penis, then pieces of the prostate are shaved off to relieve the construction of the urethra. Fortunately, it was under full anesthesia and I remember nothing until I woke up with a rather large catheter in me.

The catheter was split into 3 sections. One was to run a large amount of saline into the bladder (massive amounts). The second section was to drain the bladder. The third I later found out connected to a water filled balloon designed to keep the catheter in place. The flushing continued until the next morning. I was draining saline, blood, and small pieces of the prostate that had been cut off. I had also been given something that colored the urine orange, so the drainage ran from blood red to bright orange at times.

The catheter was uncomfortable, but not painful. I had no pain meds after the surgery. The next morning the catheter was removed (it had been in roughly 18 hours), I needed to pee 3 times before I could be released. After each time, they did a scan to be certain I was able to drain the bladder and was not retaining fluid. I was released roughly 24 hours after surgery and told to expect to see some blood and some small chunks in the urine for several weeks. It's been nearly 3 weeks and my urine is still reddish, but far better than the blood red color right after surgery. I took only one additional day off work (I have an office job so nothing heavy), mostly because I was having trouble controlling the urine stream and it was blood red....

The outcome? I'm pissing like a kid. Good strong stream and feel like I'm cleaning my bladder well. None of the post-urination drip I was having before. And at this point sexual functions are good. I'm taking it easy - nothing too rough yet, but erections are more frequent and I don't seem to be affected by the issue of losing the ability to ejaculate. I'm told that a fairly large percentage of men will have orgasms, but the cum goes to the bladder rather than shooting.

I have a follow up in a couple of weeks with the urologist at 6 weeks post surgery. Overall I think this was a good choice for me. There was no real pain, only some discomfort from the rather large catheter. And my recovery is going well.

I realize this is a massive post, but I do hope it gives some insight for guys considering surgery.

A quick update at 4 weeks post surgery. I've mostly stopped pissing orange or red. Still from time to time I see some red, but I'm told that normal. Haven't tried anything real strenuous sexually and have avoided any prostate stimulation figuring it's probably safest to wait for the doctor's ok. The only odd thing now is that at the end of a piss, I feel a light constriction or tightening. It feels like it's at the top of the penis, but I'm not certain. It only lasts a second or two, and it's not painful, just a feeling that want there before. Something to ask the urologist about during my check up in two weeks.

I already had some issues with retrograde ejaculation before the surgery. Only a small amount of cum would seep out. The doc warned that could get worse. Actually it's a little better. Still not coming like a youngster, but I'm getting about twice what I was. Still dribbling rather than shooting, but somewhat better volume. Regardless the feeling is still good.

So you still ejaculate? Good to hear. All the best.

Feel better, my buddy! Sounds like things are going smoothly. Just don’t overdue it. Had three ankle surgeries in about three years. Super drag! We humans, are not the most patient breed to walk this earth. Be careful with that prostate. You only get one !!Wishing you all the best!

Glad I ran past your post as I was to see the Urologist this past week and was told a very similar thing as what you had done by your Urologist. The Urologist did the finger up the rectum and felt my prostate and said it was huge and I was not a candidate for anything else but he would wait until the medical results come back from the labs to judge better about the size of my prostate. I am going to a second Urologist but It is just to see if I think he might be a better Urologist. This Urologist want to try medication to shrink the prostate along with flow max to help the urine flow which probably neither one will work. My problem is with getting up about every 3 hours to urinate as I only empty about 55% of my bladder upon each urination. Getting up that many times a night don't really bother me as much as it might sound as when i lay back down my head hits the pillow and I am asleep shortly. I wake up each AM rested. My wife sleeps so soundly she never hears me. I do still get some erections and all but not as many as I should at my age. The Urologist was surprised I got as many as I did. He then told me about ejaculation after the procedure. Like I told him though it has been a while since I was 16 YO and ejaculation is different now anyway.

Thanks again for your coverage of your procedure so I know what to expect should I decide to see this through.

As you recognize you are not a youngster!

I shouldn't have read this. I'm an older guy and I live in fear of having to go through things like this. I haven't been to a doctor in years, my mechanicals are losing steam and breaking down, I guess I'm hoping to die quietly in my sleep. Good luck to you who choose the knife, radiation, etc.
