News today announced that if there is a no deal, the government intends to bring in a national state of emergency. People who had booked onto ferries about the brexit deadline are being told their reservations have been cancelled because the government is comandeering the space on the ferries for essential supplies.

Meanwhile the EU confirmed that if there is no deal, the result will be a hard border between N and S ireland. No-deal Brexit 'means hard border'

And Dyson - remember him, brexit supporters - announced he is moving his headquarters to singapore. Dyson to move head office to Singapore

We have a system where not the best lead, but those whole managed to get nominated by their part. Either because they got the most support, or because those with power in the party think this person can't harm their position. Anyway, it has nothing to do with the ability to lead and it doesn't even matter.
Even if we would have a capable leader, the parliament gets dominated by middle class politicians. Former teachers, doctors, or still practicing lawyers (how comes that only this group keeps on working?) are barely interested in the outcome of the nation. They are driven by two things.

1. Get re-elected... nothing is better as a good payed job that promises an even better job, of you do it right.

2. Get that better job... It's unlikely to get elected for the rest of your life. Maybe at 45, or 50 you lose our seat and then what next? Go in pension? Not the best option...
It's better to get in some committee, make sure that laws get written in a way that fits a single company, or a whole industry and get the guarantee to get a high payed job without much work.

This combination of a very own cosmos of the parties, where those have the most power who are the one with the worst personality and a parliament that is under control of companies and wealth families is the reason why nothing gets done.

Btw. EBERYONE should read this book.

We've an intervention from Kawczynski, a Conservative MP who was born in Poland. Let me set out at the start that I think what he has done is almost certainly wrong - but he's done it.

He has made a formal request to the Polish government to veto any request to extend Article 50. The response from Poland is that they will look at any request that the UK government might make on its merits, and that they don't want a no deal Brexit. On the face of it this seems as if he's been slapped down. However:
1) Poland really may veto an extension request. It would play well with an internal agenda of their governing party. Presumably there will now be an effort in UK and EU to find out how likely this is.
2) Poland isn't the only nation that might veto an extension request. Hungary and Latvia might, and there may be others. (Five is a figure on Twitter, but I'm not seeing the other two.)
3) The point seems to be that one or more EU nations may veto an Artcle 50 extension request. It is certainly possible that a request would be granted.

************
The statement that No Deal would mean a hard border between NI and Ireland is simply false. It is not technically possible to create a hard border by 29th March. Such a border would have overwhelming opposition from the people of NI and Ireland. In view of the history of the Troubles I suggest this would be an issue for UN.

************
Stories of ferries being commandeered are interesting. It does look as if the government is making some preparation for a no deal Brexit.

May is just out of her depth.

Cameron was dishonest.

Cameron didn't get the legislation right. It should have set out what Brexit means (ie stated outside single market and customs union) and it should have set out the timetable. We're struggling with issues now that the original legislation didn't set out.

May has a difficult task, but she is way, way out of her depth. I don't understand why she ditched the Davis plan (which was a good one) in favour of her own idea that no one likes or even thinks could work.

Thats a silly thing to say. The Uk would not be prepared for a no deal Brexit by the deadline either, but it still refuses to take steps to prevent it happening. There will be all the time in the world to put physical measures in place after the event,

He has made a formal request to the Polish government to veto any request to extend Article 50.
Its obvious all the conservative party has done is waste time. They refuse to make a decision because thy will be blamed for Brexit once it happens. There is a strong argument the sooner they are forced to a decision, the better for the nation because then we can start clearing up the mess.

The EU position was logical in offering an extension for a referendum or election, as they might change the Uk position, but as things stand the Uk government has a policy of doing nothing for as long as it is allowed to.

Stories of ferries being commandeered are interesting. It does look as if the government is making some preparation for a no deal Brexit.
It obviously thinks normal trade will grind to a halt. Our conservative govenment is utterly incompetent. This is something they should never allow to happen.

Two members of staff relocating.

Dyson to move head office to Singapore

"
The company was keen to stress that it will still be investing money in its British bases.

Mr Rowan said it would be spending £200m in new buildings and testing facilities in Hullavington, and £44m in refreshing office space and adding new laboratories in Malmesbury as well as investing £31m for the young undergraduates at its university on the same site.

"Malmesbury has been the epicentre for us and we will continue to invest all over the UK," he added."

Substitute the word Congress in place of parliament and you have described the same situation in the US. In the US millions of dollars are spent on just one race for a representative in the House of Representatives. Even more for senate races. For president the total spending is in the hundreds of million dollars just for one candidate! Very few have that kind of cash sitting in a bank. Candidates depend on large infusions of money to support their campaigns If those that win their races plan on running for reelection in two to six years, then they don't bite the hand of those that feed them campaign money. In a short phrase, "they are bought off."

Some of the rich and powerful believe that it is God's will that some people be very poor and they fund the Republican candidates. (This is a belief among many middle and upper class white Evangelical Christians in the red or Republican states.) These candidates go on to win and pass laws that are causing the middle class to see a steady decline in standard of living. The rich and powerful are wiling to bring the manufacturing jobs back home. Just as soon as the pay per hour is equal to the pay per hour in Vietnam or China.

The UK and the US, who have for the most part had the same vision in leading the world since 1941 have leaders that are shooting themselves in the foot over and over.

It would make more sense to ban all corporate donations to political parties. Ban all private donations above a modest level, except where people are using their own money for their own campaign

Make state provision that every candidate has free access to media and postal leafleting. A fixed expenses allowance for campaigning. Perhaps this could depend partly upon how many active party members a candidate could get to sign up to their campaign. Maybe a modest minimum number of local voters would have to endorse a candidate before they could stand.

From time to time I read some negative comments about the US that seem to me to indicate that the UK is in some kind of slave to the master, US.

Some here are convinced that there are few similarities between the US and the UK. I see many.

One, Ms May's parliamentary troubles have made the front page several days.

Two. Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family are referred to in the US press as the Royal Family, not the British royal family. On any given day when I am checking out of Wal Mart, there are at least three magazines with articles about the Royal Family that have the picture of at least one Royal Family on the cover page that are in the magazine racks. Prince Harry's wedding was carried live on all four major networks and also on the cable news networks. Most Americans can not name one member of any of the other royal families of Europe. Yet, they can name several members of the Royal Family. The Queen and Prince Phillip, Princes Charles, William and Harry, and Kate and Meagan.

Three. The various arts media is integrated to some degree. Speaking the same language makes it easy for Americans and Britons to listen to music, watch media, and read magazines that are from either nation.

Four. The US and the UK web pages are so integrated.

Five. News articles from the UK appear in the US newspapers and magazines more than from any other nation. I would not be surprised if there is more news articles (That aren't related to a war, weather event or some kind of acute turmoil) from the UK than there are from any other nation. Canada comes in second.

Six. The first English settlement in what is the US happened in 1607. Since then there has been a steady stream of people from somewhere in the British Isles that are migrating to the US. The US history, laws, customs religion and literature are the same as what is found in the British Isles until about 1800 when the US began to have a history of its own.

Seven.. A poll was taken several years ago. The question was asked if the person would be willing to go to war if other nations were invaded. Canada came in first with about 90 % saying that if Canada were invaded, they would support the US going to war to help defend Canada. The UK came in second with about 75 %. Then Australia and New Zealand were also ranked very high. Germany and Israel were ranked very high as well. Approximately 80 million Americans have some German ancestry.

What is very important to consider about the rankings is that four out of the top six nations speak English. Speaking the same language indicates a sharing of a lot of a very significant amount of culture including some shared history, literature, customs, beliefs, and laws

There were many babies born in the US with black slave mothers and white owners from early 1600s until 1865. Most African Americans have significant British ancestry. As the oldest immigrants here in the US there has been significant intermarriages between people with British ancestry and those from other ancestries. The American culture by far is closer to the UK culture than it is to French or German cultures.

Eight. In the daily newspapers there is often mention of the UK as America's oldest and closest ally. England is taught in schools as being the Mother Country. Many Americans just don't think of the UK as being a foreign nation. The term which appears in the newspapers is "the special relationship between the UK and the US."

I suspect that many in the UK that have some negativity toward the US do so are a result of so many US/UK military expeditions in the last 70 years. I understand that. However, the UK has followed the US in many foreign dealings because it was to the UK's advantage to do so, just as it was to the US advantage. Keep in mind that it is the government in power that decides what is in the nation's best interest to be involved in some action around the world.

I don't agree with the premise that the UK is some kind of vassal state. The UK is not as big as the US, That doesn't mean that the UK is now a colony of the US. Neither is the EU a colony of the US.

My thoughts on the UK/US cultural relationship. I have done zero genealogy myself. However, others have and I have been given copies of their work. I have seen pictures of three ancestral churches and am aware of four cities from which ancestors came to the US including ancestors from Northern Ireland! One church and ancestral grave yard is in the Lake District. Two churches and grave yards are in Middle England. One ancestor came to the US in 1607. One set of great great grandparents came from Ireland in the 1840s. My grandmother said that they could not speak a word of English when they first arrived here in the US.

I agree with you! So do many Americans. The US Supreme Court has ruled that the campaign law concerning how much individuals can give to campaigns is constitutional. The US Supreme Court has ruled that corporations are like people and have rights. Corporations have no limits as to how much they can spend.

The billionaires have gotten around the law limiting how much individuals can give by sponsoring separate campaigns from the official one. These secondary campaigns do lots of negative advertising. The phrase, "Tell _______ that you do or do not approve of ___________. Fill in the blanks. The dirt that these secondary campaigns drag up is relentless.

Also, the US elections dates are set in stone. In the UK there is a limit of a few weeks of campaigning. In the US some have already declared their intent to run for president and are already raising money and doing speaking engagements. This starts in earnest in January after an election in November the preceding year. It gets old. Some people get turned off by it. Many Americans believe that both parties have the same basic goals so they don't bother to vote.

There is some truth to the charge that both parties are alike. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have a corporatist wing
where the wings of both parties do the bidding of the large US corporations.

Ah, so you think he should have forced the leavers to define what they meant by Brexit and to therefore eliminate most interpretations of what it meant. that way fewer people would have supported it, remain would have won and we would have none of the current disastrous mess.

and it should have set out the timetable. We're struggling with issues now that the original legislation didn't set out.
It did set out the timetable. Cameron said we would leave the day after. It wasnt true, but even given two years more to figure out how to do it, the conservatives have still failed to find one. It cant be done.

May has a difficult task, but she is way, way out of her depth.
The conservative party chose a remainer to lead them to stop Brexit. She hasnt done too badly so far. She has proved it is pretty much unworkable.

You mean, the rest are already there?

So you not recall that Dyson said he wanted Brexit so that he could bring his chinese engineers to the Uk more easily?

Did you read the bit about £300m plus investment in the research centre or does that just not fit your narrative?
