Inspired by a thread in ‘Ask a Man’.

By and large, the guys there find peeping toms a hot thing. Personally, I don’t. I had one once. I was living in a basement unit of an apartment building and the drapes were mostly closed - open maybe 3 inches. I was sitting on the sofa studying (I was in uni) when I got this uncomfortable feeling. I glanced up and saw the outline of a man watching me through my window. The phone was at my feet and I pretended it rang, but I actually dialled 911. Cops were there in a few minutes, but since they had their lights on, they scared him away.

Scared the hell out of me. I stapled my drapes together. Never even cracked the windows for air, no matter how hot it got. Never lived below the 3rd floor after that either.

So ladies, peeping toms - hot or not?

I've never dealt with one that I know of, but I think it is pathetic, predatory, and disgusting behavior if someone does that. There are so many consenting individuals out there who want to show off, for free or for pay (exotic dancers, cam workers, adult film actors, etc). Zero reason to be that sleezeball violating fuck.

I know, right. I felt so violated. Just sitting there in my sweats, drinking a glass of water, and studying. How long was he watching me? And why?

In the other thread, guys talk about “putting on a show”. That was the last thing on my mind. I was scared. I just kept talking to the 911 operator and watched that guy watching me out of the corner of my eye. It was so creepy.

We had a show over here years ago called "Cracker" (it was actually pretty good) about a criminal profiler. Anyway, a prof at my university was touted, or maybe touted himself I'm not sure, as the original "Cracker".

At the time (probably still the case, I don't know) there was a fair bit of scepticism around psychological profiling but his lecture intrigued me enough that I read a couple of his books.

Apparently a peeping Tom is a HUGE red flag for escalating behaviour. In one particular case detectives had been perplexed how a murder victim had been chosen. Turned out she never closed the blinds in her flat.

On winter nights with all of the lights on and an unobstructed view into her flat, her killer had become fixated on her and watched her for hours, fantasising before ultimately killing her.

He advised women never to leave their blinds/curtains open with the lights on as it gives these people the opportunity to fixate. He said you can't stop them, but you can reduce your chances of being their victim.

As soon as it's dark, my blinds are closed - I can't relax with them open.

I loved “Cracker”! Robbie Coltrane, right?

Anyway, I’ve read that. Peeping toms are a huge red flag for escalating behaviour towards rape etc. Canada’s most notorious serial killer, Paul Bernardo, started out as a peeper. It’s just disturbing that someone would want to watch someone while they are completely unaware.

That's the one! I had only ever seen Robbie Coltrane do comedy before that, but he was brilliant in it.

It *is* really disturbing and the technology easily available now does make me a bit paranoid.

He was kinda sexy in that show, too.

Yes. Very disturbing. It's like being robbed. It's so violating that I cannot imagine a single scenario where it could be construed to be hot. I would not care for a lover to be spying on me. That's just creepy as hell.

Oh, yeah. I had a peeper. I also had a gun. That son of a bitch cut a flip and ran away quickly.

My Dad learned me well.

As far as peeper being an innocent kink... Bundy started out peeping. Heaps of serial killers start out as peepers. It's the first step to depersonalizing violation.

I mentioned before how our office building was across a courtyard from a five-star hotel in Atlanta. Many times we would catch exhibitionists in the windows of the hotel. It was not a lovely sight. We were helpless without curtains or blinds on our windows.

But an advertising manager really creeped me out one day. I was in his office discussing a project when I came around his desk to highlight some detail in the paperwork. That's when I noticed a pair of binoculars on a small stand near his window.

I quickly went back across the desk and never went close to him again. Ugh, the thought makes me shiver.

What a creep.

Not every peeper becomes a serial killer/rapist, but nearly every serial killer/rapist starts out as a peeper.

So glad I keep my curtains closed at all times
I thought my drapes were closed. They only gaped just a few inches. Just enough for that creep to look in.

Now my bedroom is on the second floor of my condo, but I have blackout drapes. There is not an inch of space to look through. And when I lived in apartments, I lived on the third floor - I was terrified of someone climbing up on my balcony.

I was also robbed once, when I was home, and combined with the peeper, my sense of safety has really been violated. Doors always locked, drapes drawn, and windows closed. Not going to make it easy for anyone to get in.

I don't know if I ever had a peeper at my house here. But in the master bath there is a wall of glass brick in front of the tub. Husband said we should put up curtains, and I said of course not. It's made to where you can't see through the glass. He said he wasn't too sure. That side of the house faces a neighbor, but there are some orange trees in the yard sort of near the window, but not directly in front.

We were here about a month when my husband again said he didn't like all that glass in the bathroom. He said when I took my bath he would go outside to see if he saw anything.

When he came back in I asked him what he saw. He said he could not see any detail, but for sure there was a naked woman with blonde hair and big boobs standing in front of the glass toweling off. It was more clear than the Playboy channel when he was younger, and it would have been more than enough to get some jollies off.

He put a lattice arbor up the next day.

Good for Capt protecting you!

Had to laugh at the Playboy channel reference, though. :joy:
