One other thing: it's impossible for a man to overproduce testosterone. Only a woman can overproduce it. And when a man supplements androgens (either synthetic steroids or bio-identicals), if too much is detected in the body, it will "aromatize" into estrone and estradiol.

I'm not sure what you mean. It's impossible to produce enough to aromatize?

It's not that simple. Testosterone is not the only hormone that influences sex drive. DHEA, DHT, androsterone, androstenedione and androstanediol- the other 5 androgens- also influence sex drive. So you can technically be deficient in testosterone, yet still be horny as hell.

A'yup, I knew there was more to sex drive and erections besides just testosterone.

I am so glad I posted this thread, because I was hoping someone knowledgeable like you, Big Red, would come along.

Thanks a bunch!

I will do the cialis for daily use for now...well for the next 31 days at least. My insurance won't cover the cialis past that supposedly unless the urologist sends them a "letter of medical necessity".

I am scheduled to see the penis pump salesman on Monday morning. If he shows me some gadget that doesn't have a gauge on it, I am going to laugh him right out of the office.

Did I mention my insurance won't pay for that either?

Of course, before I do laugh him out of the office I am going to collect all sorts of "gouge" or "intell" from him first.

The main thing I would like to see is some scholarly peer-reviewed journal article somewhere that says penis pumps work for A, B, or C list of symptoms.

I would like to see some sort of documented routine as well...so many days in a row for so many minutes at such and such pressure.

I am guessing I am overly optimistic though about the salesman's grasp of any and all things scientific based on the urologist's lack of understanding of what means and standard deviations are.

I might get so pissed off at the penis pump salesman that I'll ask point blank, "What is the doctor's cut on this?"

The cialis for daily use, in my opinion, is just a band aid of a cure....treating a symptom versus getting right to the "disease". So I guess it will have to do me for now until I can get in to see an endocrinologist.

As far as exercise goes, yep! I am going to be working on it. There is a competitive stair climbing event in St. Louis on March 19th. It is basically a race up 42 floors of stairs. That is my goal to finally attend that, this year, 2011.

I saw the penis pump salesman on Monday.

He is a younger guy, probably in his twenties.

He started his sales pitch. About the third sentence in, I cut him off at the knees by saying "I don't mean to be rude, but let's just cut to the chase....so how much?"

He said for the battery powered motorized version it was $550.

yes, you read that right $550. he also went on to say that the manual pump version was $260.

fellas, I am in the wrong line of work. jeesh!

he is selling the Pos-T-vac pumps:

postvac_lp_main

so the guy asked me what kinda use I had in mind for it or what the doctor had recommended:

A. pre-sexual intercourse....get the vacuum going, get an erection, then slide a cock ring off the tube and around my penis to maintain the erection

B. daily use for therapeutic purposes

the urologist had suggested just for daily therapeutic use.

so then I asked him about any scholarly peer reviewed articles that he could show me. then he said that most of the medical journal stuff were studies done on men post prostate surgery, not younger men like myself.

then he just happened to ask if I got erections at night in my sleep. I told him that I didn't pay all that much attention....hey...I'm sleeping....but I did tell him that occassionaly woke up with morning wood.

he saId that scientists theorize that men have erections at night while they are sleeping as a way to excercise or maintain the penis. (the whole if you don't use it, you lose it thing) he said men have between 3 and 6 erections per night.

then he went on to say that is what is recommended for therapeutic use with that pump. he elaborated with just to have the vacuum on for 30 seconds after reaching a full erection. after that 30 seconds, hit the relief valve and go completly flacid. then start the vacuum pump up again and once a full erection is achieved again hold that for 30 seconds. hit the pressure relief button, go completly flacid again.

do that for a total of 5 times.

he went on to say that it is meant to simulate the nightly erection activities.

to me, yeah, that makes sense.

so later when I talked to my girlfriend, I told her about that part in the conversation. I told her that I don't really recall having any sexy dreams lately. she is an RN and she replied with"you men don't have to have a sexy dream to have an erection."

I was like "WHAT!?"

she said, "yes, men have erections during REM sleep."

I said, "but, yeah, that is when you"re dreaming...during REM sleep!"

she said, "No, it just happens during REM sleep...you don't have to be dreaming something sexy!"

"oh!"

so sure enough that night I woke up a few times with a raging hard on after some plain ol'
run of the mill dreams.

I did tell him that my insurance already said that they would not pay for the pump. he was kinda shocked by that.

I will talk to my insurance again, but I doubt that will change.

$550 for maybe $20 or $30 worth of plastic....jeesh!

is it any wonder why health costs are so high? (rolls eyes)

I've been on testosterone patches for about 5 years now. My understanding is that the gov't has standards for each age range. Therefore, If you fall into the acceptable range for your age the Dr cannot prescribe testosterone (TRT) for you. Testosterone is like fertalizer for cancer. So, you might want to only use it when absolutely needed. It is also necessary, by law, to have you T level checked each year befor having the prescription renewed. I feel normal and am able to perform adequately with the help of viagra. I should also say that I am well over 60 and the interestis still there. I think daily cialis and a pump(be sure to shave smooth)would be a real turn on. Go for it!

Yes, my old male Dr. prescribed it, I took shots for a couple of years, had libido back, but lost my testicle size ( went to the size of a plum pit ). I had to go to another Dr. and SHE had qualms about all of that as I am diabetic and she was concerned about insulin and T... so no more T. My testicles have grown back a bit, but still, T isn't something to play with and I have lost a lot of libido again. grrrr.

Pardon the necro post....

But I finally got a script today for testosterone cypionate.

I am supposed to inject myself a half a mililiter every two weeks. I got a ten month supply. My insurance wouldn't cover it, so that was $123 out of my pocket which included the needles.

Also, of special note, I also have sleep apnea. Been using a CPAP machine for 2 months now.

I'm not saying one caused the other. A chicken and the egg thing. I also packed on about 40 pounds this year.

I think I had sleep apnea since my early twenties, back when I was in college. I am 40 now. Who knows, I might have had low T back then too.

The script I got today had to be a hardcopy. Something about being a controlled substance. I treated it like it was gold since this rigamorale has been going on for at least 4 years. arrrggh....

I haven't done a search here yet, but if you're on testosterone I'd sure like to hear your story especially your dosing schedule.

I dont know why you would need injections, I have used testim, and axirod and was suppose to start one that you rub on your inner thighs because my levels got too high..
in my case it has done the following:
acne all over my chest back face..not bad but had to get another prescpription,
constant hard ons... constant...a little annoying because its like being dressed up
and now where to go... you get wood, but, little interest in it..
lost some body fat, gained muscle, but i work out everyday..
and its cheap if you use your coupons that they start you out with!
and with axiron, (1) month supply lasts me (3) months..so i keep refilling, have a stock of it for when the coupons run out or the end of the world and i have to repopulate...
and my balls have shrunk, they used to hit the water when sitting on the toliet, now
just regular size...
and you have to keep having your prostate levels checked...
i dont know if its worth it at 53 yrs..

From another forum, I read that the injections are more effective than any cream applied to the skin. It is extremely easy to do and doesn't hurt.

My endocrinologist gave me the option of the shots or the cream. So having read that other forum I jumped on the shots first chance I got.

I am so, SO! Glad I didn't buy that $500 penis pump.

Arggg... I have a few friends/acquaintances who are M.D.'s and they have told me point blank that outside of an operating room a doctor is just a salesman.

It torques me off that I could have shelled at $500 for a product I didn't need and wouldn't have been effective.

In Massachusetts there are pretty strict laws against pharmaceutical companies providing any money or incentive to prescribe a specific treatment. I've noticed the drs here seem almost hesitant to prescribe sometimes to the point where you have to keep pushing them. On the other hand when I lived in California the doctors there always tried to push the most expensive and newest product even if my insurance didn't cover it and the ones that were covered worked just fine. Wish drs could find a better balance.

I believe that I was told that my level was 950 when I was 22. It was considered "high."

There are pros and cons to everything in my opinion. Being middle aged, my levels have dropped a lot. Seems about right now.

High t-levels cause one helluva lot of problems for a lot of people.

Today, there is research that supports "Optimal" Total Testosterone levels should be between 650 and 1000.

It's true that too much can cause issues such as an enlarged prostate but there are a host of reasons to keep your Testosterone in the optimal range.

Excluding any anomalies, it naturally goes down with age.

I've been on Androderm patches for several years now. The patches made me feel "normal" after only two days. I use one 2 miligram patch each day. The only strange side effect was excessive pubic hair growth( corrected with intense pulsed light(IPL) treatments. Now I'm smooth from the navel down. I've had a radical protestectomy, so no prostate to enlarge. PSA is still undetectable after 10 yrs. Generally, I pleased with the whole ecperience. Good Luck eddie7039
