Yes, somehow I don't think the results of THAT election were on the White House Christmas wish list.

Yes, there is a lot to love about a leftist-communistic leaning guy who admires Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro and who chooses that fountain of moderation, Al-Jazeera, to broadcast his views to the world.

He's also a coca leaf farmer who knows that W would decimate those fields in a New York minute.

He should use Fox News instead.

That's not sarcasm you're smelling, SurferGirl.

I don't like seeing a coca farmer leading a country. I know of the coca leaves, they are wide-spread in Central and Western South America as a remedy against altitude sickness, you won't get addicted to them, but they still are the raw material for cocaine. Something has to be done against that stuff, and I don't know if having a spokesman of the coca farmers as president will help.

as it will be a scream when the Coca farmer leader of Bolivia sits down to talk with the world's most powerful coke head/drunk in the world. what could they possibly have to talk about? Their spoon collection? recipes? terror in
the jungle? the mind boggles with possiblilities.

Well, the basic issue will come down to, do we allow other nations to run their own government or not. What we think/feel about their chioces is not really my point, are they free to operate their own country as they see fit, or are they only free if they kiss OUR ass?

the Roman empire didn't take kindly to satellite nations snubbing them either

but I doubt the American empire will endure as long as the Romans

What it really boils down to, as far as what is left of the US is concerned is this:
    1) Do they have oil or other natural resources we want and can profit from?
    2) Can we bankrupt them through the WTO and World Bank to obtain #1?

Almost every Latin American leader got elected by railing against the US in some way. I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

Bush makes an easy target to distract the morons while you're busy looting the country you're running. Tin plated dictators never had it so good...

Oh, I agree implicitly. What I'm wondering is if we will in fact get out of HIS coca fields if he directs us to do so. Take away the moral outrage about cocaine, how do you feel about another government's right to do something with which WE disagree. Are they free or not?

They (other countries) absolutely should have the right to produce what ever they choose.
We have the option to set up embargos or, as the US has done in the rediculous drug wars, poor tons of money into the drug producing countries to persuade them to produce alternative crops, a policy which has proven extremely expensive with little success.

Fuck that! They produce something that we can't seem to not buy so the only solution is to eradicate those fuckers! it's their fault we have drug problems, shame on them!
