Of course there's a difference. Kind of like the difference between the styles of pianists Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubenstein, the former being almost mechanical to the latter's lyricism.

I, too, prefer Bell to Perlman. My favorite, though is Stern.

But Perlman and Bell are two different generations! Every generation has to be better than the last, and there's such a huge "long line" of violinists that it's almost impossible to cut it as a concert violinists (and pianist, too) these days.

But I still appreciate all the previous generations; what they do is still beautiful and will never be replaced by flashy young virtuosi with nice haircuts. I bow down to the older fellas like Heifetz, Milstein & Oistrakh, and I had the pleasure to see Charles Castleman perform. I believe he's one of the last of that generation (I couldn't care less if Menuhin's still alive) and I was musically captivated, not just "holy shit he just nailed those fingered octaves"-captivated (which he did and made them sound lyrical, not just showy).
