My friend lives in Ottawa, Canada, they now have a new National Holiday called "Family Day" It only applies to some Canadians. Why call it National Holiday? and why does it only apply to some people? Any Canadians who can shed some light...

Thank you. Do you why is applies to only some people and not all within the province?

Most of the folks in Ottawa are federal government employees. Its a provincial holiday, so provincial employees and students get it off. Fed workers still have to go to work!

That truly sucks. I wonder if its only Ottawa where it applies to the Feds. Another good reason to go West, young lady

I guess it's a good way to get President's Day off in Canada.

No, its not. If you are a provincial employee in ontario, its family day. If you are a federal worker in ontario, you are going to work.

Most non-government places are not open, so most of those folks get the day off as well.

Either way, Its a great DAY !

Every province has its own "made up" holidays, Ontario has family day, B.C has B.C day.. just an excuse to get a day off.

I'm sick of all the this days and that days and weeks - national breast awareness day, national aids day, national no smoking day.
I just checked and in the UK in January we had 13 special days including Bug Busting Day and National Salt Awareness week.

Some provinces elected not to make it a day off.

uhh, other provinces didn't vote on it?
Dalton McFathead made it a new holiday only weeks before the election, he basically bought people off with a bullshit holiday.

    No complaints though.

Actually, he made it a holiday after the election, which has slightly different implications.

Many provinces have their own holidays - St. Jean Baptiste Day/Fete Nationale in QC comes to mind.

If this were done in the US, the politicians would specify that a family consisted of exactly one man and exactly one woman.:biggrin1:

'Pro family' means anti gay south of the border.
