Florida priest removed after beach photos with woman published

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- An internationally known Catholic priest sometimes called "Father Oprah" has been removed from his posts in Florida after published photos showed him lying down bare-chested in an embrace with a woman on a beach. The Rev. Alberto Cutie (pronounced koo-tee-AYE) -- who got the nickname "Father Oprah" because of the advice he gives on Spanish-language media -- remains a priest. But he was relieved Tuesday of his duties at St. Francis De Sales Church in Miami Beach, Florida, and at the Radio Paz and Radio Peace networks, said a "deeply saddened" Miami, Florida, Archbishop John C. Favalora.
The photos of the Cuban-American priest appeared on the cover and on eight inside pages of this week's TV Notas magazine. The cover says in Spanish: "Good God. Padre Alberto. First photos of a priest 'in flagrante' with his lover." In a message posted on the Miami archdiocese Web page, the archbishop apologized to parishioners and radio listeners for what he called a "scandal.""Father Cutie made a promise of celibacy and all priests are expected to fulfill that promise with the help of God," Favalora said. "Father Cutie's actions cannot be condoned despite the good works he has done as a priest." Cutie apologized in an online statement Tuesday, saying he "wants to ask for forgiveness if my actions have caused pain and sadness. ... I assure you that my service and dedication to God remain intact." "We got a bunch of calls from sobbing women," said Miami archdiocese spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta.

A Few Random Thoughts
  • Is anyone else relieved that he was caught with an adult woman and not an underage boy?
  • I'm not Catholic but I'm pretty sure you go to hell for schtupping a priest.
  • I wonder where they will send him? A parish where the average age is 62?
  • They were at the beach who is to say he wasn't going to do a baptism by immersion?

Not the first priest to fail to live up to his vows and won't be the last. He may end up doing his ministry to a hospital or as an airport/forces chaplain perhaps.

So ridiculously hypocritical of the American Catholic church. Priests all throughout Africa are openly married and so are a number of priests here in the US who converted to Catholicism from Episcopalianism after their marriages.

In my friend's parish in Ireland it was discovered the priest was sleeping with his housekeeper and when the town discussed it, they were so happy he was sleeping with a woman that they told the archbishop not to remove him in no uncertain terms. The archbishop backed down.

He was very outspoken about the ridiculous non-married clergy in RC - I think it's his way of making a statement. There are over 25,000 meN who left due to celibacy issue - if they returned - some of whom can't even read the lessons during Liturgy - there would no shortage of priests in US. So instead, they import foreignors who neither know or want to know the American culture.

Celibacy was mandated in the 1100's - due to the fact that when the priest died, the family got his inheritance instead of the Church.

This is not what Jesus intended - love is all you need - neither sexual orientation/gender or celibacy should be at issue - only issue TO SERVE & BE HAPPY.

Good on him. This notion of abstinence being necessary to be a priest is absolutely ridiculous. Only asexuals could ever be fully devoted priests.

Well being abstinent is also sending a message. That you will sacrifice a physical relationship and give your life to God and have a relationship with him.

I want priests to get married to though. I think teaching and spreading love is more important than making sacrifices and exhibiting willpower to show your faith. But both are essential.

I think there are many ways to show self sacrifice.
I think they should be allowed to marry. It adds credability when giving a sermon about marraige related issues.
The church should reconsider, just to save itself.

Ahh, the handsome priest. I have seen them before. There was one that even put some Spanish Cumbia music at the end of a mass. His point was that we should not all be so uptight and the church can be fun. He even did a little dance. You could just see the women drooling.

No one asked him to take the vow; no one forced him to take it either. It's a matter of living up to your promises....just like in marriage.
Because so many marriages fail, do you want to abolish the institution of marriage with its promise/vow of fidelity? I don't think so.

Fully agree with both of you. Just makes a job description for perverts and gays; especially gays who can't seem to control themselves around little boys.

I was gonna say something along those lines..
But, I was gonna say, if he messed with a little boy, hell not ONLY would he still have his area in the Church..
They would MOVE his ass up in the higher ranks...
