Over the course of years here you come across words in LPSG posts that you rarely see other places. Here are some of my favorites I can remember....

Misanthrope - hater of humankind

Flummox - to confuse or perplex

Ersatz- an artificial substitution

Sycophant - a fawning parasite

Elan- distinctive style or flair

Any more?

I believe the current phrase is "ten dollar word", earllogjam.

Somehow, "fifty cent word" doesn't conjure up much of anything anymore.

I think the worth of words has remained the same. It's the dollar and all that it can buy that has become more and more worthless.

I used to see the word "paradigm" tossed around here a lot (as if failure to use it in, say, every other post relegated one to the ranks of the intellectually non-elite).

On the flip side..."definately" (with an "a" instead of an "i").

I personally love to toss in an occasional "anyway" (a local colloquialism).

If the increasingly insubstantial, repetitive, formulaic and desparate 'sour grapes' threads in the Political forum of late are any indication - one could come to believe Obama is playing Allende to Bush's Mussolini, and Socialism is the new Fascism.

Also:

The rise of 'Lib' (and derivations thereof) as a catch-all sleight, used primarily by those with little or no idea what it means nor what they're yacking about when they bandy the term about so casually.

The use of Neocon, in much the same way as 'Lib'.

A couple of bizzare misuses of penultimate sprang to mind ... right after irregardless (on which I second MB).
