Many of the Beatles' songs have been covered. Three that I particularly like are Tina Turner's gospel interpretation of "Help," Tim Curry's reggae remake of "I Will," and Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of "Dear Prudence".

...and don't forget Nina Simone's Here Comes the Sun.

Of course, some covers never should've happened; anyone else heard Nana Mouskouri's cover of the Moody Blues classic "Nights in White Satin"? What was she thinking?

Amen Brother. Let me add Billy Idol doing L.A. Woman.
He should have shot hung and pissed on for that blasphemy.

I think it sucks. The vocals are so loud that it borders on parody.

The NIN version is incredible though.

Agree... hendrix originals often seem unapproachable, even on first listen to Jimi's versions.. that covers are just either passe, fucked up, and/or missing the point.

Sting doing Little Wing... and I looooooooooooooooooooooooove Nothing Like the Sun, but that was awful.

Derek and the Dominoes doing Little Wing..... they could coulda given what little time they gave us on something better.

I've seen / heard a slew of Hendrix tribute albums, all are uninspiring.

Of note... Jimi was in London... the Beatles had released Day Tripper... a couple days later... the Experience drug themselves into the BBC studios (pun intended) and ripped a blistering (but uninventive) cover of Day Tripper on the spot. Impressive.

Jimi covering Earl King's Come On (part I) set the standard... many many artists covered that thereafter... all doing Jimi's version. Just like All Along.

Not to get WT... but SRV (Stevie Ray Vaughn) had Jimi's spirit... didn't do anything inventive, kept Jimi's spirit, but added so much Texas/southern spirit, if not plain old fire... and passion to already great songs , they were still worth the price of admission (Voodoo Chile, Come On (part I), Third Stone from the Sun, come to mind).

The Black Crowes doing Cocker's Feelin' Alright... too bad Joe didn't have Marc Ford ripping the solo on the original. Crowes bring up a level, thanks to the solo, and Chris Robinson's southern gospel influences/nuances.

I forget a seminal 80's punk band (and there were great ones... Black Flag, Charged GBH, 7 Seconds... DK was stilling rolling, Circle Jerks, Bad Brains [remind me to start a thread on Bad Brains], etc...).

7 Seconds doing 99 Luftballoons.

Oh, more Frank Zappa from the Best Band You've Never Heard In Your Life (this time Vol I)...

I Left My Heart In San Francisco
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
Godfather Theme (part II)
Bolero (though Page/Beck's Bolero was the first rock entry)

Claire, love, this is not the packaging we're talking about here... a "cover" is when one artist does music previously released by another artist. For instance, Barry Manilow singing "Smoke on the Water" is a cover.

Oh sorry, honey, will you forgive me?

I know that too, but my initial thought was the cover of a record or CD. You know, there have been famous and infamous ones too, much discussed and controversial ones.

As for the covers you are talking about, I don't like the most of them, especially what's played on the radio now most of the time, when someone does a cover of the better songs from my time, see Madonna singing "American Pie".

At the risk of letting out my inner hippie pothead... many 'jam bands' out there are real big on covering pop hits/longtime favorites in concert, even if not so much in the studio. Whether it's Jay-Z performing his songs alongside Phish, Keller Williams covering "Ice Ice Baby" and "Under Pressure" together, or Les Claypool's latest group reinterpreting Pink Floyd, it's a genre that knows the art of the cover and is well aware of how to do it... A personal favorite of mine has always been Phish's Live Phish Vol 13 album, in which they cover the Beatles' entire White Album in between two other full sets. One of the few CDs out there my whole family can listen to  .

Not a problem! Although I suppose we could start a whole new thread on "cover art."

I agree with you, Claire, that most covers just don't seem to capture the magic of the original artist, but in some cases, it is just necessary. Dylan was such a good songwriter, but with such a horrid voice, so I guess that just about anyone doing a cover of his stuff would be an improvement.

I know this is just disgusting, but I was in a store one time, and they had the Muzak playing merrily in the background. I had to leave the store, though, about 12 seconds of the Muzak cover of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" was about all I could stand.

I don't know who did the original, and I don't know how many covers have been done, but what about "How Can I Live?" Trisha Yearwood comes to mind on that one, but I don't think she originally released it. I've heard her version, an R&B version, a couple of others I can't even remember.

Devo's cover of "I Can't Get No Satisfaction?"

Has anyone ever done a cover of Laurie Anderson's "O Superman"???
